As I said I'm new to bow hunting but I really want to get into it. Don't have the money to spend in a compound so I'm using a "Sierra model X 18" 50 lb recurve that a friend gave me when he upgraded to a compound. Sadly he is out of communiation so I have a bunch of questions about what is best to use and nobody to ask and no archery shops nearby. I already have a dozen "Easton xx75 gamegetter" arrows, they're 400's (came already nocked but the odd fletching points up, not to the side. Is That bad?), and I'm shooting 100 grain field points and have a deer target from another friend. Any info about what else to get/do would be nice. Broadhead suggestions, anything to change or add, what kind of game I can get with it (we have hogs out here). So yeah. Like I said, I'm new so any info would be much appreciated.

*edit* by the way the arrows are aluminum. Also I'm not shooting off the shelf, using a "flipper rest 2"

You will be able to harvest any animal that you want with that bow. Once you get accurrate with it! The arrows may be a little over spined but they will fly great. Make sure that they are fletched with feathers. As for broad heads check out the Slick Trick brand,but there are a lot out there that will work. I would also suggest a 125 + grain head if you are going for very large animals, but the 100 grain head will go clean through most game in Texas.

You can actually use plastic vanes if you are shooting off a flipper rest. Most trad guys use feathers because they correct the arrow flight a little better and they look cool, but then most of us are shooting off the shelf and vanes don't work very well off the shelf.

Sorry, I skipped over the part about using a flipper! You don't have to use feathers as stated by Wayne.

Choosing a broad head will be difficult and you will change your choice with time. here is a video that we did on broad heads.

Spencermac, start shooting at five yards, when you start grouping them walk back three yards and shoot there and so on. If you will do this it will bring your confidence up and consistency. You will not be stacking arrows at twenty yards with a recurve to start with, don’t get discouraged when you let an arrow fly, that’s going to happen shooting traditional.
The trick is to keep shooting with the same set up, you want to make it a memory reflex, soon you will be shooting without thinking about it, and before you know it you’re shooting instinct.
Shoot, shoot and shoot more. Check out Korean archery on the net, that will give you some idea what archery really is. Few know anything about archery, most fling a few arrows and kill a few animals and they believe they are archers!

Put feathers on your arrows and add 50-100 grain inserts. Your shots for traditional will top out at 20 yards. I keep mine shorter if possible. I use a heavey arrow and it stablizes the shot and you will get complete pass throughs. Use a two blade broadhead (magnus) and ensure its sharp. Most guys shoot off the shelf. Practice your short shots and work your way out. Nothing beats traditional!

Thanks you guys. I keep hearing about feathers and that they should be used. Any specific reason why? And how do I go about changing them and what direction the odd one should point? I know that they work great for shooting off the self, should I stop with the flipper and go off the shelf?
Also Reich, how heavy an arrow do you use? And aluminum vs carbon?

Spencer, it does not matter whether you use a flipper or shoot off the shelf. That is personal preferance. The flipper will allow you to shoot plastic vanes if you want to, you have to have feathers to shoot off the shelf or your arrow flight will not be very good. Tuned correctly, either one will work fine.

Arrow weight is also a personal preference. Arrow SPINE is what is important. You have to shoot arrows that are spined correctly for your bow. I would think the 400 spine arrows you have would be about right for a 50# recurve. You need to be sure you know what your draw length is. If your bow says 50# at 28", and you are only drawing 26", then your draw wieght is going to be closer to 44# that it is to 50#, which msay change the arrow spine that you will need.

Heavier arrows will be slower but have more penetration. Lighter arrows, the opposite. I have seen two whitetail does killed by a friend's son shooting a 41" Longbow that were both complete pass throughs with a 400 grain arrow, so penetration is usually not an issue unless you are shooting BIG hogs, then you need all you can get.
