Treebass...that sucks about Academy not having that gun...it's almost like a bate and switch deal. Can you at least order it?? I know Stoeger has plenty of guns...wonder if they were just limiting Academy. To my knowledge this is the first I've seen them sell the Stoeger or the Franchi. Wonder if they have that Franchi i12 they have in the ad??

They would probably order one, but why don't they just stock them?? I want to handle it and see how it throws before I buy it. If I did get that chance elsewhere, then I might be inclined to order one. So we are still shopping around, just could not find an excuse to drive to waco..

Not sure where you are in Cen Tx but if you go to Sportsmens in RR, Cabelas in Buda...or even Webers in temple I know they would have one you could at least shoulder. Not to mention many of the other gun shops.

Went to Sportsman Wharehouse in RR last Sunday; cheapest auto was a Winchester for about 800.00

For what its worth, I have a good friend in South Louisiana that uses a Charles Daly. He swears by it. Wal-Mart sells it for about 300.00 They also have the Mossberg model 935 for around 400.00 and the Remington 1187 for a little over 500.00

I have always wanted a Remington, but for picking up an inexpensive gun, the prices on the Charles Daly and Mossberg are tough to beat. I favor the Mossberg becuase they are made here; while Charles Daly imports his.

Goodluck.

No question, spend the $400 & get the Nova. The 870 is a good gun, but they're heavy. Last summer I got a Winchester 1300 Speed Pump from Gander Mtn for $250. It's been a good gun, but the synthetic stock didn't hold up to their reputation. I'm gonna have to send it to MO to have it replaced. If I had it to do over, I'd have got to Stoeger or the Nova for sure.

Will the Stoeger, Rem 1187 or the Benelli Nova work well for other birds like turkey and pheasant ?

I'd say yes...Killin. Turkey guns don't really take much...just need a full choke...3" chamber is fine. As far as upland birds like pheasant...one thing a lot of people look at is how heavy the gun is...but yeah they will all work just fine for that as well. For pheasant most people just shoot a IC choke and 1 1/4oz to 1 3/8oz loads...all the guns will handle those.

About the only thing you need a real specialty gun for is for clays because a lot of those guys like to reload and shoot ultralight 7/8oz or less loads and in some semiautos they might not cycle...and most skeet and clay shooters don't us a pump. But for the weekend shooter that's just going out and having fun while shooting clays that stuff doesnt matter because they will just buy the standard 1oz or 1 1/8oz loads.

I just got the Stoeger M2000 in Max4 camo at Cabelas for 425 a few weeks ago. Very happy with the purchase. Great dove gun. It comes in the box with an extra full turkey choke as well as 4 others from full to cylinder.
Only thing I wished it had extra was the ability to shoot 3.5 inch shells(3 inch max).
It is not gas operated so it's easier to clean.

1187/1100's are good all round auto's too. I have an 1100 that's a good all round gun. Down side is it only shoots 2 3/4 inch. Bad thing with these autos are they are gas operated and more intensive to clean.

I'm all about shooting some 3.5" shells but you can get better performance from a 3" hevi shot (or some other denser than steel load). The draw back is those shells cost 3 or 4 times as much...but if you are turkey hunting you'll only need one or two shells. Goose hunting would be more expensive.

I was in the exact position a year ago. If you find out that you don't like duck hunting...........then you are a [censored]. Sorry, but it is the best hunting there is. Last year, my first duck year, I opted for the remington 870 super mag full cammo. One thing you will find is that the full cammo isn't as durable as all say it is. And the other thing you will find, is that the cammo pattern will matter less and less the more you hunt. If your gun is black, my guess is that it looks like a stick to ducks. The plain, matte black gun is a better deal. You won't have to obsess over why the camo pattern is peeling off, and your black finish is going to do the same job for less cash. You can even get the camo pattern stock and hand grip later if it will make you happy. Don't opt for an auto, any auto as cheep as an 870 pump or mossberg 500 pump is not worth the investment. The next question from here is: Supermag or just 3 inch chamber. I opted for the super mag (3.5" chamber) and to be honest, I have only used it once (when I ran out of 3 inch shells.) And in addition, it usually jams. The jamming may just be my gun, but keep that in mind. If you are planning on hunting some geese, and maybe turkey, get the super mag. If not, you will never use it. Ever! Take my word for it. All have their oppinions, but here is mine, which is better. The mossberg is good for one reason. It has the thumb safety. It's really cool. Thats the only reason. It feels cheap and noisy compaired to the rem 870. Other than the fact that my 870 will jam when loading 3.5" shells, and that the cammo is peeling off after less than 1 year's mild use, I have no complaints about shootability and feel. To sum it up, I would do one of the following: go with the plain black Matte Finish 870 supermag, or with the plain matte black finish mossberg 500. Keep in mind, the 500 can only take 3 inch shells. Within the cheap pump market, either go all out (870 super mag) or go shallow end (mossberg 500). And that is my correct opinion.

Then again, I have only been duck hunting for 1 year.

Well guys....I went out early Saturday morning with some good friends from work, Mr. Brown and, Mr. White, after a "is your [censored] sore" dare. If the world was flooding and I had to pick two specimens of every species to put in my ark. I would pick these two guys for the human category. I figured God would take a rib from each of use and make us a woman or we have enough females of the other species in the boat....Anyhow I digress...

Mr. Brown let me use his spare Beretta 3901 American. Mr. White had the decoys and "blind area" setup by the time we got there.

The 3901 was a nice light gun with very little recoil, or so it seemed, maybe due to the adrenaline rush I got when the first 4 or 5 ducks flew in. The gun was easy to shoulder and fire. I really liked it.

Our hunt was short, but sweet. We managed 6 teal and 3 decoys, moments of friendship and a life of memories. I just can't wait until i'm much better and can take along my son.

If you make the purchase, we will need to discuss my finders fee.

If you are referring to the Mossberg 500, I think it weighs same as Remington 870. Maybe you were referring to a different model Mossberg.

I hate it when Mr. White starts shooting at the deeks. It does a job on the paint but they taste OK in my jerky.

Compared to what? I believe the Nova weighs more than the 870. Maybe I misinterpreted your post.

Can't offer a lot of help on guns. I have shot the same Browning pump for over 20 years and don't plan on getting another gun unless this one is stolen or ends up at the bottom of a lake.

As far as camo, check out the specials on websites such as Cabela's, Bass Pro, or search camo on the internet and you will find tons of sites that sell discontinued patterns. Most important thing is try to use whatever natural cover you can find or build a blind. The more cover you have around you, the less need for camo clothing. I will warn you that you are on a slippery slope. Next it will be a boat, Lab, 4x4, lease payment, PO'd wife or girlfriend, etc. LOL.
Hope this helps,
