What .270 ammo are you using? I just got a new Mossberg 10o ATR and was wandering what ya'll recommend for whitetail and hogs? Mainly hunt around Bryan and south of Seguin. Mostly shots under 100 yards, maybe 150 tops.

I would say Remington Core Lockts would be just fine in a 270 at those ranges. I shoot ballistic tips in mine, but that is more bullet than you need for those kind of ranges.
I am not a big fan of the Core Lockts in magnum calibers, but in a 270 they have served me just fine in the past. I have always shot the 130 grain.

i have used a plethora of .270 bullets, but i like the hornady interlocks.
much better constructed than the core-lokts or the silvertips
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Go find some Federal ammo loaded with 130 or 150 grain Sierra GameKing bullets as these have always given me the best accuracy and game peformance at a "standard bullet" price with Winchester Power Points & Hornady Custom ammo not far behind if at all.
Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets at 270 speeds on up close shots have a bad reputation for not penetrating very well although they are extremely accurate. I like the BT's in a 270 but only in the slightly slower 150 gr'ers at about 2800 fps MV's to prevent the BT's famous blowout problem, or as I handload I download the 130's to the same speed as the 150's.
270's in factory 130 gr'ers should be running about 3100fps at the muzzle, aka MV's, and lots of excellent bullets have been designed since 1925 for that performance range. OBTW IMO you do not need to buy Premium bullets - which the Ballistic Tip & Hornady SST are not IMO. Premium bullets are bonded like an Accubond, or multi chambered like a Partition, are solid copper like a Barnes TSX, Trophy Bonded BearClaws or the new solid copper Nosler ETip that will out in 30 caliber ammo very soon...but the prices are sometimes so close to the BT/SST's I don't understand it. OBTW Remmy CoreLokt's also have a spotty rep for erratic accuracy and bullet performance...I've had three straight 300WMg's that just would not shoot them in less than groups measured in feet.
Old style "Cup & Core" are what we have been shooting for the last 100 years very successfully and have a solid copper jacket with a lead core that performs beatifully at the 270's Muzzle Velocity's. You will however need to try several different brands to see what shoots best in your rifle. Have fun. Ron

I shoot Federal Premium with 150 gr Sierra Boattails. Some of my shots are 300+ yards so I'm looking for long range performance.
When I hunted around Fairfield, I handloaded 130 gr Ballistic Tips (that was before you could buy them already loaded) and I reduced the load down in an attempt to prevent shoot-throughs at 50 - 70 yards. In 13 years, about 75 yards was the longest shot I made. With that load, the energy of the impact was tremendous. I forget the velocity but it was well under 2000 fps. More than once, the deer landed flat on his back (feet up) after impact.
Determine your most likely ranges, find a good bullet, and then look for a manufacturer that offers that bullet in a round that shoots well. Or...you can handload and live at the gun range for a few months. With todays premium ammo, handloading is more a choice than a requirement but it is fun and rewarding.

I believe any of the soft point ammo will do fine just fine. Find what shoots best out of your rifle. If you decide to shoot longer range go to a bonded bullet such as an accubond or fed fusion. If you want something fail proof go with a barnes triple shock in fed ammo. Mean stuff!

I TRY TO USE HORNADY EXCLUSIVELY FOR MY .270! IN PARTICULAR .140gr LIGHT MAGNUMS WHEN I CAN FIND THEM. RIGHT BEHIND THEM ARE 130gr SST's!
WHEN YOU START COMPARING BALLISTICS OF HORNADY AMMO TO OTHERS, THEN YOU'LL SEE WHY!

I shoot Hornady's in everything except my 300 Weatherby.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I have used a bunch of different loads in the .270 and just about any factory load would work for your situation. Being one to "optimize" for game/distance I would look at the Remington 150 Corelokt load. It's a round nose bullet, but still shoots plenty flat even for fairly long shots.

I have shot everything from rem spcore lokts to barnes tripple shocks out of mine, and the end result is all the same, with a well placed shot you get a dead deer. My favorite would have to be the nosler partitions though. A bit pricey to buy, but if you load they arnt bad. I would say go with the hornady interlock, they have worked well for me and are reasonably cheap.
