Posted this in the firearms section without much activity. Anyone use one? How effective? My wife wants to shoot a bird this year, but is scared of the 12. Thinking about buying her a 20. What do yall think?

a 20 will work just fine. My mom uses a 20 and has taken several turkey with it. It still has the exact same lethality of a 12 ga, but just with just a tid bit less shot.

Go for it, I killed several big toms as a kid with an old single shot 20gauge. I'd try to limit the to 35 yds, use #4 shot. I havnt looked at 20ga ammo in years, try hevi-shot if it's available. Good Luck!
gonna hide out in the bottoms, where i hunted deer and turkey, i know that swamp like the back of my hand-Chris Knight

With some of the new loads like the Remington HD the 20ga is as effective now as the 12 was 15 years ago IMO. I have seen #6 HD shot drop turkey at 43 yqrds and on the parrerning board it is impressive. THose shells are expensive but it is not like you are shooting a lot of them for a turkey season. Called in 2 big gobblerw a few years ago for a young man that dropped them both with his 870 20ga youth model, the first at 20 yards the next at 43. The #6 shot at 43 yards got complete petration of head and neck.
Have fun and good luck

My son uses a 20 with #4 lead, works great out to 40 yards. He tried stell 3" #2's, they work good, just cost a litle extra, full choke as well. Good Luck

I've been using a 20gauge the past couple of seasons and like everyone else has been saying, it's been plenty to knock down a bird. I shot one a couple of years ago with it at just over 40 yards while he was pecking on his dead buddy and he never twitched. I think it a full choke in it though and I was using #4's. I've also guided for a man and his 12 year old son (at the time) that was using a 4-10. He killed 2 turkey with it in one morning. I had him wait until they got within about 15-20 yards, but he killed both with one shot. He then hit a big tom later in the morning about 30 yards, but it literally sounded like they bounced off the birds feathers.

With a 20 ga., the limiting factor is pattern density. You'll have better luck with lead #6s than you will with 4s or 2s...
Better yet, get some Federal Heavyweight #7s, or some Hevi-13 6s or 7s. Those will give you a much more effective load.
Best of all, load you up some TSS #8s or #9s. That will give you 10 ga gun in a 20 ga body.

Depending upon how well he shot and the gun performed I was planning on taking him turkey hunting. Well out to 25 yards, don't think he will have a problem. Amazing how bad the patterns looked at 30 yards, even though they looked fine at 25 yards.

Grew up huntin' thunder chickens with a 20 and normally grabbed whatever ammo was in my grandpa's cardboard "ammo box" in the garage. I bet most of them were 2 3/4" #6 or #7 lead shot. Never missed a bird but I never tried a shot much over 30 yards. Good luck next month and post some pics!
