I`ve been carrying Glocks for 17 years everyday as a Police Officer, and I have been a Glock Armorer for over 6 years. I bought my son a XD in 9mm just because of the grip safety. He was 7. I bought a .40 XD for me, and liked the guns. Last year I went through an XD armorers school. I went home and sold both of the XD`s, and replaced them with Glock`s. I really liked the XD`s and the way they shoot as well. Just way to many weak parts, and trouble areas. Whatever you do DO NOT DRY FIRE THE XD`s. They are not made to dry fire, and you will break parts.

They are not made to dry fire, and you will break parts.  I dry fire mine all the time, and have thousands of rounds through them without issue. The roll pin that contains the firing pin can get weak with lots of dry firing. If you plan to dry fire alot, just buy a harder roll pin. EASY to replace. I've dry fired mine countless times with the original roll pin and havn't had issues BTW.....if the gun feels right in your hand, you won't regret getting an XD.

I bought my son a XD in 9mm just because of the grip safety. He was 7. You bought a 7 year old a 9mm handgun? Wow, I thought I started mine young with a 10/22 at about age 7. However, he is 14 now and has run a few thousand rounds through the pipes of various handguns ranging from 22 to 500 S&W Mag, mostly 9's & 40. Oops, forgot about the original post --- Glock --- 3rd generation or older.

I carry an XD40sc every day. I do have the extensions on my magazines though. Definately makes it feel like a full size frame.
