Our landowner just put about 8 horses on our 400 acre place. Anyone know any obvious disadvantages or problems they may cause as far as deer are concerned? Putting them on the place with only a couple of weeks left before season is a bummer but whatcha gonna do.

They will destroy your feeders...and hang around them..even with a varmit guard they will push a 55 gallon drum over in no time...see if you can come to terms with the owner and se if you can keep them in a corral for deer sseason or a smaller fenced off pastuer..we have 2 on 400 acres and they hang around all the time...

Man that would tick me off if that was my lease. Have you talked to him about it yet? Not likely that he would do much about it probably. Horses get into everything and will eat just about anything. Fence off your feeders if you can. They will lick that spinner plate and clean out that feeder.

DO NOT LEAVE CORN IN THE BACK OF YOUR TRUCK! They will literally eat the paint off the bed. I saw a brand new truck DESTROYED, ( paint job ).

we have pens around our feeders from the psycho cows we use to have on our place. It does tick me off but it's not our land and the place is really inexpensive compared to what most others are paying so... I was really worried about them following us to stands or hanging around. One of my cams had about 200 pics in a week near a pond and 180 of them were the horses just hanging around. The biggest reason I even asked is the deer pics have diminished big time on our cams since the horses were put on the place about a week or so ago.

Ah ok. The original flag was with a cannon. Just thought I'd ask.

The big drawback to horses it that they want to hang around with people and they love corn. Buy a cheap CO2 BB gun from Walmart "20 bucks" and shoot them in the Arse when they come to your blind with you. The deer don't give them a second glance unless they are taking up all of the feeder space.
The BB gun will usually do the trick. Does not hurt them, and will eventualy teach them to leave your stands alone.
We have enough youth. How about a fountain of "smart"?

Make sure you have a fence up around your feeders. Horses can eat corn off the ground where as cows can't. Talk to the land owner about putting them in a separte pasture during season. Most of the time horse will come check you out and if you don't pay them any attention they will leave. Do not shoot them with a BB gun. Most horse owners think their horses are the best in the world, If he finds out that is what your doing your gone, plus if one of them ever gets torn up on a fence he will blame your BB gun.

Just ask if you can catch them and leave them on a halter when yall hunt or use a slingshot which doesn't make as much noise as the bb gun or bow. Which if deer aren't scared of electric fence which I don't know a horse will not go within 20 yards or so of an electric fence.

Shoot someones horse with anything and you surely would be gone from the place and in some cases your teeth would be gone too. That ain't the Texas Way. Fence off your feeders, do not ever pet or feed the horses. They are a pain in the butt as far as hunting pastures with them I know for a fact. We own several and hunt our farm too. Best bet is to ask the land owner if there is a solution he can suggest and go with that. My .02 Jimbo

Hmmm, Let's make a comparison here: I loan you (for a very cheap price, so let's call it rent) my 2004 F350 FX4 4 door truck... Extremely cheap rent mind you, how about 2 dollars a day?? The only stipulation is that you must leave the radio on classical music, say one station in particular. That station is based in East Texas.. You only have to hear it when you are on the Eastern Side of the Metroplex.. The rest of the time, you don't hear a thing. Are you gonna refuse the truck because of it ?? Naaaah. All this to say that I think if you have a decent lease, at a good price, put up with the nuisance horses.. I have 3 hay burners myself.. Only reason I keep them is because the market sucks so bad right now, you can hardly give them away ! Good day !! Daniel
Daniel Just Because... That's why.

For the cost of a couple of bags of sweetfeed you can keep them away from you. They'll hang around where ever you feed them and wait for their snack. Don't shoot them with anything unless they're threatening to harm you or yours. And, like Txguy1972 said - they love to peel the paint off your truck!!!! I either pen mine up or feed them everytime I go out. Sometimes it takes awhile, but they'll catch on and when they see you coming, will run to the gate, ready for the sack. In one place I hunt, one old lone horse hangs out down in the bottoms. He's come to the conclusion that it don't do any good to hang around my ground blind. He won't get no feed and I just use him as a diversion.

I might ask someone else to give them some sweet feed but I wouldn't do it myself. For an animal with such a small brain compared to body size they sure can learn who doles out the treats. Farmer Brown may have a corral or small lot of some kind you could call them into and pen up for the morning or evening hunt etc.... That's why I suggest letting the land/horse owner think up a plan for you. He isn't apt to call foul on you if it was his idea, haha. 10-4 on the paint peeling for sure!!!!! Adios for now Y'all.
