I think that people overthink their spreads wayyyyy too much. I just like to play the wind and make sure there's a hole for them to land in. If you're on a small private pond, then put the dekes where you don't want them to land, and leave it open where you do want em to land. If the ducks wanna be on that pond then theyre gonna sit down regardless of what letter, roman numeral, or fraternity symbol design you put your dekes in.

All right, here.
Contrary to what DU magazine says, ducks don't form up in a "J" or a "V."
Throw them out randomly with a hole exactly where you want the ducks to land.

I agree with that. I will add this.. Ideally, you scout the day before, see the species of ducks on the water, how many, where they are sitting…. Ideally, you are watching them at sundown and see where they are on the water when they take off for their nightly roost. Ideally, the wind conditions will be the same in the morning and you now know where the x will be because a very high percentage of those ducks will be right there in the morning you can bet your last dollar on that, and if you have a spread out there, ideally, you want it to look like it did the day before (same number of duck, same species, same placement, etc..) so when said ducks arrive in morning, they will feel most safe about landing because nothing looks unusual.. I normally only take about 18 deeks or less, I just can’t be bothered messing with more. If I think I will be shooting gaddy's all morning, I take cheap mallard hen deeks work fine. I got a bunch of gaddy deeks I just have not rigged up, hen mallards work fine. If I'm going after mallards then I take mallards and plenty of greenheads, and if I expect to see pintails then I take those too. For sure play the wind, if wind is coming out of the west, that is the side of the pond/lake you want to be. Most will tell you they like wind to their back so ducks come strait in, I like a side wind so when ducks are coming in, they are not looking straight at you. Make a landing spot for the duck so they don't have to fly over other ducks to land. And cover up and sit still. Take EM!!!

What happens if you hunt between I-35W and I-35E

Moose, contrary to your scouting efforts they do form J and V patterns very often, next time I'm scouting from the helicopter I'll get some pics for you.
Guy, your waaay over thinking this, everyone knows you don't need dekes to kill gaddys...

How does the topic change from decoy spreads to 35 to kraft dip?? yall need to find something else to do. . There is no one spread for any one situation, that's why its a funny question. Just keep a opening where you want the birds to land, as a general rule later in the season, ducks don't like to fly over decoys, so keep your flight lanes open. Kelly
