Glock 21 sits on my nightstand.Occasionally visits the kitchen and garage, even the pond. No CCW, just 13 rounds of hard hittin dependability with night sights.

I appreciate all the information. I spent my Saturday handgun shopping - roughly 30 gun website reviews, 2 academy's, BPS, Cheaper than Dirt and the Dalls Gun Range. During my day of gun porn I came to the conclusion that the Glock feels the best to me with the HK USB compact a close second. Looks like a Glock 19 gen 4 is the gun for me.
Side note - any opinions on the Glock siderlock safety?

Side note - any opinions on the Glock siderlock safety? You ought to do some reading on glocktalk.com. If you read enough you will find somewhat more unhappy owners of Gen. 4 guns than happy ones. You will have to search long and hard to find complaints on Generation 3 or earlier guns. On the Gen. 4 guns there are complaints about the finish not holding up as well, guide rod issues, and just that some of them came out of the factory not functioning properly. The earlier versions are famous for “going bang” every single time. I don’t think the Gen. 4 has earned that reputation just yet. I believe that going bang every single time is the single most important feature of any gun. I know that there are Gen 4 owners that haven’t had a single hiccup, and great for them! However, there are posts on that site reporting otherwise. Just about every reliability issue you read about on an earlier version has had some kind of modification made to it. There was a thread a good while back about just that topic--modifications. As tempting as it is to look through the Lone Wolf catalog and put all those goodies inside, a pure stock gun is considered to be the most reliable. And just one thought on all the people saying it doesn’t have a safety, have you ever seen a double action revolver that has a safety? Maybe one exists, however a child can shoot a Smith & Wesson. Good luck with whichever route that you take!

I have heard alot of the same things on the Gen4's. Thats why when I was lookin for a 21 I was going to settle for nothing less than a Gen3.

The issues with the GEN 4 guns where directly related to the fact that is was designed with the intent to be a LE only Version, and the RTF II would be the improved version 3 for Civillian use. After several concerns where adressed about the RTFII it was dropped and GEN4 replaced it in both LE/CIV side.
As such one of the main flaws was the dual recail spring, in .40S&W it was more than enough to operate the firearm reliably, using backwards compatability like on previuos model they tried using the same Guide Rod/Recoil Spring in 9MM and .40S&W. As long as 9MM +P rounds where run through the gun it would generally function, with regular target loads it was a tossup.
As of my Class 3 Weeks ago both the Heads of Glock Training Division and LE Sales said the problem was adressed with caliber specific Recoil Spring/Guide Rod combo's and that if we encountered any of the original's call for the new Guide Rod/Recoil Spring and replace it to cure the problem.
They also mentioned at this time they did not see Glock Phasing out the Gen 3 for 3-5 years minimum, I also learned there breaking ground on another plant in GA, to expand the Glock to 100% of US production, Frames included.

I just do not like the angle of the grip on a Glock. Always seems if it is pointing up in the air and I have to turn my hand downward.

I`ve been a Glock Armorer for over six years now, and work on a lot of Glocks. I went through the XD Armorers course last year, and then went home and sold both of my XD`s. For you guys that own the Xd`s " DO NOT DRY FIRE THEM " They are not made to dry fire, and the guns will break. They have many many more parts, and are a pain in the A$$ to take all the way down. I can tell you I loved my Sigs, HK`s, and one of my 1911`s, but I bet my A$$ on my Glocks. Just my experience with the weapons.

I guess its like the AR craze and the more stuff added to a simple gun turns people on. If the SHTF I can guarantee you you will want simple every time.

Glock is easy, put rounds in the mag, cycle it and GO.
I love the way the 19 fits in my hand, it's just ripping an ready to go. I was just thinking about that last night w/ mine.

If you aren't concealing it check out the 17. You get an extra 1/2 inch of barrel and 2 more rounds. For a night stand gun, I completely agree. I am a big fan of G17's -- I own several of them. They fit well in my hand and I like the slightly larger magazine capacity vs the G19.

Even though I traded for an XD one time, and shot it fairly well, I sold it because of reading a very similar post like this on another forum. Some gunsmith said that the XD had a lot more parts and that some of them were pretty fragile. I liked those videos Tin Head posted as well. That old fellow could shoot that G19!!!

I can't believe no one has said it yet... Check out the Glock 21, 30 or 36. I've got all three.

If you have ever shot 1911's at length and liked them, the way they shoot and feel, then yes, I can talk you out of it. The two are not compatible. If you love 1911's, you simply will not settle for the feel of the Glock. If you have never shot 1911's then you will have a totally different outlook on Glocks and will probably learn to shoot and like them, lots of people do, but not those who have put a lot rounds down range with 1911's.

Over the past thirty-five years I have put a LOT of rounds down range with about a dozen different Colt or Springfield 1911's. It usually goes like this, bang bang bang bang, clear jam, repeat .................

Been through lots of pistols, buying, selling, trading, have always kept a glock 19. Reliable, cheap ammo, little recoil, plenty of power for self defense needs.
It's still "we the people", right?
"If it bleeds, we can kill it."
