The only time 'too much' comes into play is if you want to keep the fur. HOWEVER, I've seen 'em shot with a .270 and not much fur damage..it just depends on whether you hit bone and what bullet you're using. Go for it.

.270 should punch a hole right threw without a ton of expansion. i personally dont own a .270, but my friend who i hunt with owns a 7mm-08 and he has no problem. just heavy grain bullets will likely go right through without too much expansion. Now that being said, if you hit alot of muscle and bone and DO get expansion you will have a nice exit wound...

I load 130gr SSt's for my buddies Tikka T3 that he uses for coyotes(he doesn't hunt deer either) when we go calling. We intentionally aim for the scapula on coyotes, and even when he does actually hit the bone, he still rarely has an un-repairable pelt.
It is a misconception that you must use short bullets for big calibers on coyotes, it's actually the opposite.
