I have heard a lot of mixed reviews about calling pigs. This question has come up on here in the past, but I can't remember anyone stating anything about having much luck. I know that they sell calls, and I have had javelinas come to a call, and know of others that have had javlinas come in to a varmint call. The only thing you can do, is get out and try it. If pigs don't come to it, a bobcat or coyote might thinking their gonna get a pig lunch out of the deal. Good luck and keep us posted on your results.

I picked up a feeding hog tape for my old Johnny Stewart caller a few years ago. A few trys here and there got no results. I had a situation hunting in Graham a couple years ago where I had a herd of about 30 mixed size hogs out in a green wheat field. I stalked into a downwind position on a treeline within fairly close range. Thinking I might have some fun I turned on the tape. To my surprise, it resulted in a stampede, but away from the sound. I only had a single shot, actually a combo rifle/shotgun over under, and felt very lucky to have picked off one of the smaller running hogs, though I did have to run it down with a pistol to finish it. CHC has seen my combat style of hunting. Now, it was a somewhat agressive feeding tape. If I tried it again I would probably go with a mouth call and us it sparingly. Maybe draw more on the hogs curiousity with some grunts or just some light piglet distress sounds. But I sure would not suggest going Hog Wild with the call. Yep, you know me, ever present camera was in my pocket. Ain't it cute?

The mouth style is what Im interested in. I saw the boar grunt, distress squeal, and the piglet distress. I was leaning more towards the piglet in hopes of momma coming in to make me some bacon lol.

That(piglet distress) is the only one that works at all! AND...it doesn't work much.

I have dealt with this question for several years. The answer is there is no call for feral hogs except the smell of something to eat. I have turned down I don't know how many requests for hog calls, I tell them they do not work. A while later most tell me about buying some hog call and tell me they should have saved their money. I have never had anyone say they actually called in hogs to the sound like a coyote can be called. Your best bet is to go to Arkansas and watch a few of the hog calling contests, then practice what you have heard, because it will work just as good as the 50 or more commercially made hog calls on the market. Or just practice yelling SUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SUUUUUUEEEEEEEEEE. But if you try this one be sure to tell the neighbors what you are doing, I am sure they would appreciate knowing that you are crazy.

I’ve had a lot of different responses. They will respond to a grunt/snort/squell. Also, if you force air either out your nose or mouth to simulate loud breathing, they will respond as well. In thick brush, you can find out quick if anything is there. They will go directly down wind (99% of the time), come right-in (young pigs), or haul [censored] the other way (smart pigs). I have never gone out to “call in a pig”, but I have messed with them quit a bit. They are very vocal and make a lot of noise. If you simulate those sounds, none aggressively, they will usually be curious enough to investigate.

I've used to CD with piglet in distress for a couple years, works fairly good if you have lots of young pigs in the area. Yup I've tried for two years now to get that Old Fart dogcatcher to make me a hog call, but you know how them Old goats (I mean Farts) can get set in their ways

Nice pic, John...but cute, it ain't... The piglet-in-distress call is what I have and only use it at night when my kids/grandkids want to hear coyotes or owls - good for such as that. For hogs - it don't work, at least for me. Attractants are the key for hogs, and of course, being out there...mostly at night.

In the opinion of this old goat, you can use a high pitch rabbit squeal and get the piglet squeal. But you still won't call in a hog.

It is the broad opinion in this forum that calls are not all that effective for hogs. That's all.
B&U - you ever heard the phrase, "Even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and then."? There's no doubt that a person can call any creature that uses sounds to communicate, imo, but it must be either "one of those things" that'll make a hog come check it out, or there hasn't been a call that's been perfected yet. And, if there is one that does the job effectively everytime, I haven't seen it nor heard of it.
When I first got the piglet squeeler I took it down to our neighbor's who had about a dozen or so wild hogs of all sizes penned up. Some had been there for a week or 10 days, some he just caught. They would look and I thought they were attentive or at least curious, and would snort now and then. But after taking it in the woods and using it a time or two with no results at all, realized that it must have been because they saw me and couldn't relate a human making that noise. I never had one squeal or grunt from a hog in the wild while using it. I know they were close - - they are always close...and lurking...always...

just kidding of course! I figure it's a chance issue with many variables...curious/aggressive pig, hunger etc...

The absolute best pig call I have ever seen is the sound of corn dropping.

Brushhog - if someone could perfect the sound of my feeder going off, you could call them that way. I've been sitting in a blind when the feeder goes off, and as its throwing corn they mosey out of the woods to feed. Usually to a short and quick end with the .30-06 behind their ear.

We were dove hunting in Comanche some years ago and there were fresh hog markings. We went back out later that night and started calling and got an answer almost immediately. It was a moonless night and we were just sitting in the back of the truck. I’d call, they would answer. About 90 minutes later there was a group less than 40 yards out. Due to a spotlight malfunction we were unable to get a shot off, but had a great time “talking” to the hogs. We have been able to replicate this a couple more times but not with the same group. Once they fall for it, they seem not to again.
The worst day hunting beats the best day at work.
