I saw a post from "The Boar Buster" where he said
"If I cant weigh one in the field I will measure around his chest just behind his front legs. A 300 lb hog needs to be 50 inches around. This method is suppose to be 95% correct."
In the field with no scale how can I come close to how many pounds it is? Is the method he is talking about for when the hog is X inches it is z pounds
Thanks

Thats the one I have. I carry a rope with me most of the time. If I am a long way from the truck I will measure him with the rope and tie a not in it and then measure when I get home.

I'm usually not with them long engough to even take a picture. If I haven't killed all of them in the group I'm hauling arse after the rest of them.
I always go with the "subtract 50" method though. I look at it and guesstimate using my advanced FFA livestok judging skills, then subtract 50 pounds. That usually gets me in the ballpark.

I subtract 100 lbs from whatever someone says it weighs and that will get you close...

Last weekend we had a hog on the scale (hanging) and used the heart girth / lenght method mentioned above just to see how close it was.
The scale - that I know is accurate displayed 205lbs, and the meassurement method only came out to 160lbs. When I used the belly girth it got to within 4 lbs of the scale weight. Could have been that we were measuring the pig hanging on the scale and this skewed the messurements a little.

Here is another link to the ole' measurement-weight ratio. It goes up to 500#. http://www.getapig.com/estimating-a-hog-s-weight-without-a-scale-t390.html
