Myself and four friends just got back from a hog hunting weekend at HCR. We had an incredible time out there. You cannot beat the hospitality that Bob, Doreen, Simon, and Brandon show you while you are a guest on their hunting ranch. They are extremely helpful throughout the entire process from the time you call to book your hunt to the time you hop in your truck to leave. If they can do anything for you, they will.
If you are a novice hunter this is the place to go. They are very patient, willing to help and teach, and will do everything they can to ensure you have a succesful hunting experience. Most of our group consisted of novice hunters and we left with 9 hogs in under 36 hours. 2 were taken with rifles, 7 were taken by dog/knife. Bring your ice chests, and borrow a couple more from family and friends cuz you will be taking home alot of meat.
I would highly recommend the Dog/Knife hunts. They are a rush and still as safe as they can possibly be with Bob and his dogs there. We had the good fortune to also have a couple of Bobs friends come out with their dogs as well, so we had alot of very experienced help and guidance available. Wear eye protection and long sleeves cuz the brush is THICK THICK THICK in some parts and every branch reaches out to grab you as you run through it.
The stand hunts for me and one of my friends were great since we actually got kills. My other 3 companions werent as fortunate that nite. I would recommend bringing a good 200 lumen plus LED light and having optics on your gun for the best chances (illuminate reticle on mine was a huge help as well). The guys in our group that didnt make kills that night had either open sights or cheap low rated lights. They all had hogs come close enough to their stands, but their equipment limited their ability to get a quality shot. Also bring drinks and snacks, a good book, or your Ipod cause it can be a while before anyone of the porcine persuasion shows up.
Another plus of the trip is a mule ride with Bob driving. He only has one speed and that is wide open throttle. Dont eat right before hopping in the mule with him. Youve been warned. Fortunately on the Dog/Knife hunts Doreen drives so you get their with internal organs intact.
Doreen feeds you like a king as well. We were greeted with two cakes and a big breakfast. Everything we ate their was delicious, and there was always plenty of it. The guest cabins are "Spartan" with pretty much only beds. But you really dont spend much time in them anyway. There is a TV in the main cabin where you have your meals if you need some couch potato type entertainment though.
Anyway, we will definitely be going back as soon as we can. Big thanks to HCR for an awesome and very memorable weekend.
