I have been doing some research on some public land, like Old Sabine Bottom, Tawakoni, and Cooper areas. Thought it would be worth the 50 bucks to have a few places to set in the woods close to home anyone have any luck or advise for these places. I have alot of weekdays off so I will go then to try and beat the crowds, going tommorrow to do some scouting. Thanks guys.

Please do hunt the Sabine river bottoms...it borders my lease, so I would appreciate the push of some deer over the river! Kidding, but serious. The old WMA place has lots of deer, and a Sasquach too from what I hear. Plenty of hogs as well.

Thanx Ray I looked at the land on google earth, and told my buddy I bet the land around it gets alot of deer from the pressure because it looks like theres a funnel to the nearest woods that is not public everything else looks open.

I can tell you old sabine has some very nice deer, archery only except draw hunts but if you are willing to go the extra mile you can be very successful. Dido for Cooper but it can be a little crowded depending on where u hunt. We hunted hogs this past weekend on the Island across oilers loop and I saw 2 tree stands that someone had already hung for the bow season (stands are not to be left more than 48 or 72 hrs I believe) and I had just jumped a monster 10 point and was thinking of hunting there. I would rather not be hun ting on top of someone especially if they are willing to start hanging stands on public land before they are supposed to.

Make sure that you tell the wardens about that. I can't stand rulebreakers no matter who they are

I hunt Cooper on and off during the season to quench my thirst for huntin' when I can't get to my camps outta state and I have noticed that the southwestern part of the area has been really crowded ever since I arrowed that nice 12-point..dang..wasn't supposed to mention that on-line..must have been one of the COE guys tellin' everyone about it..lol . Only part of this post is true...but you gotta figure out which part...

"Public land in Texas is disappointing."
To you, maybe. It's not what other states have, but I definitely like it.

The way its starting to shake down is there is 3 types of public hunting in Texas. The first is the unrestricted,no permit required, centerfire rifles allowed areas...National Forest and the Type II areas that allow rifles.Personally I dont want anything to do with those areas. They're over- crowded and the hunting sucks. Then you have the areas that only allow bowhunting or issue 20-120 rifle draw permits per season. Those are the type WMAs I prefer. The hunting is much better. Then I guess the last type public hunting would be the areas that are almost imposible to get drawn for...pronghorn hunt,Chaparral WMA,etc. I have a feeling public land hunters in other states are dealing with the same issues we are here in Texas, finding a decent place to hunt.

swampthang,
"The first is the unrestricted,no permit required, centerfire rifles allowed areas..."
How can you tell if an area allows access vs. needing to be drawn to hunt on?

Anybody ever hunted Caddo National Grasslands? I went up there last weekend to scout it out, and it looks promising. Any info would be helpful. I have never hunted public land before, but can't afford a lease this year.

Hopedale basically its the National Forest land in east Texas that allow centerfire rifle hunting and all you need is a hunting license. The maps and locations can be found on the 'net. Or for 48.00 you can get the type 2 permit from TPWD,it offers a lot more options, especially if you are a bowhunter. It also offers a few areas for rifle hunting. All the info will be in a book they give you when you buy the permit.

Bois d'arc creek south of 408 is a good place to start looking around...bowhunt if you can, weekdays are quiet up there as compared to weekends when squirrel season starts up..

Thanks Swampthang. Was looking at Somerville WMA for a possible bow hunt.
