I figured it up this year and I spend about 1000$ on shells for duck hunting. I go about 4-6 days a week and I wasted abunch of shells. I have a friend who has a reloading bench he said that I could use. What I was wondering if anybody already does this and they can help me out in getting started. Like powder, primer, wads, pellets. just need some info so I can get to saving some $$$$. Thanks

I started shotshells a while back and don't consider myself to be qualified to help anyone at all yet, but I think I can say with confidence that you'll find it worthwhile and enjoyable. Maybe the best thing you can do is get your hands on a couple of shotshell loading manuals and pick out some recipes before buying any components. It's not a mix-n-match game like rifles and handguns.

Casey...you need to know what you are going to shoot and then by the components for that recipe. Look at Alliant, Hodgedon and find something that will work for you.
I like the Lightning Steel recipes they are fast and pattern well. RedGun turned me onto them and really helped me get setup. I also am loading 2.75 and not 3 inch shells...oh and I don't feel I am giving up a single thing.
That should give you some stuff to look at and google...you have more questions post up, I am sure he or I will see it and can help.

I have worked through the economics of reloading several times in the past few years. If you shoot enough you can make the numbers work. However, there is a nice side benefit of the actual process. I initially dreaded learning another process to do something I can pay someone else to do but there is something pretty gratifying in sending something down range, or into the air, that you made. You may not be enamored by that but I sure am.

I tried to get some AA hulls this year and only found a couple of hundred. Haven't loaded them for dove yet, this summer probably. Haven't tried steel shot for duck as I haven't done much duck hunting in years. Where do you get high brass for steel shot?

Look at Remington hulls..ANY of them. I don't like the newer Winchester hulls, even the AA's as the plastic formulation for them seems to have been changed over the years. No matter how much adjusting I've done, they just seem to turn out with a funky or inadequite crimp in both 6 or 8 fold. Could be just me, but I've tried different wads, weights, charges. The older AA's were awesome.

slow...you don't need high brass for steel. I'm using a Federal hull that is low metal (not even brass) tth...I agree 100% it isn't just you they look like **** no way around it.

Best way to get started is to find somebody that is already doing it and go see the process in person. Someone said that Cabela's was putting on "reloading" class's???

My advice:
Use Remington Hulls. STS are best in my opinion. You should be able to find them for 5 to 10 cents each. They will load 5-10 times depending on how hot you load.
You don't need high brass.
Depending on the press, you may have to set up special to reload steel. It is not as easy as just replacing the lead bottle on a MEC with a steel bottle.
Get a good manual. Read it.
Follow recipes exactly. Shotshell reloading is not like rifle reloading. Shotshell is very component specific.
Try to find someone who reloads to show you the ropes. It can really shorten the learning curve and keep you from wasting money and possibly hurting yourself.
If you are around Lubbock, I'll be glad to help.

Excellent advice!! All I've been using for the past two years are Rem. STS or the Gold Handicap hulls..however, I've found that pretty much any Remington hull works about as well as the other. I like the Remmy Black Beauty hulls, I seem to have had really good luck with them as well. I prefer a 8 pt fold over the 6..but they both form and hold well.
