Anyone know who keeps black powder in stock around DFW? Cabela's was out last week. Looking for Goetz FFF.

Bass Pro sometimes has it but you have to ask them as they don't keep it on the floor. Most places do not keep much bp on hand due to restrictions (It's classified as an explosive, not a propellant.)
If you shoot alot, it's better to purchase online...although you need to place a big order to offset the hazmat fees. I buy 20lb at a time which comes out to about $13 a pound with shipping and hazmat included. The last time I looked, Bass Pro wanted $20 a pound. I purchase from Powder Inc.

Maybe they've changed their policy lately but Cabela's in Fort Worth told me they don't carry black powder. They carry the "smokeless" equivalent. It's an ATF classification thing. I order my BP from Graf & Sons. There's a $25 hazmat fee but if you order 25 lbs. at a time, that's only $5/lb.

Gibsons Outpost in Mesquite $21 per pound, plus tax!
The Feds require dealers to store BP locked in a powder magazine and BassPro dont have one, maybe theyre dealing some under the counter or out the back door but I doubt it. The guy I spoke to at the gun counter in Garland doesnt even know what black powder is.
Theres a dealer in Hobbs NM and one in Bentonville? AR
In my experience there really is no black powder "equivalent" only black powder substitutes. If youre shooting a modern inline or something try 777 or BH 209. I only shoot side locks so no subs for me.

Yeah. It's hard to find local. Graf's sells their brand for $13.99/lb. The $25 hazmat fee covers up to 50 lbs so if you buy a bunch, it is definitely the cheapest place to buy powder. On a 50 lb order, the hazmat fee only adds $.50 to each pound. It would be nice if groups could get together and make group buys but the Federal Government realized that and placed restrictions on how you can buy/distribute BP. If you do it just right, you can get around that law but I don't remember the exact steps.
I buy 5 lbs at a time so it ends up costing $18.99/lb.

Does not surprise me about the Garland Bass Pro, I know they have to hire people but Dang cant they learn what different products there are. You might try Wileys gun shop in Canton.

Thanks all. Just found out a fellow coworker's son works at Grapevine BassPro. He said they have it behind the counter, ya have to ask for it, not on the shelf. We'll see.

Well...I didn't look up the law myself but on one of the muzzle loading forums I belong to, there was quite a discussion and everyone agreed with the following.
It is illegal for me to take money from a group of guys, put it together and buy the powder, and then distribute out to the guys.
Somehow, the ATF considers you to be a distributor or distributing agent or something. The ATF does not care about the fact (probably because we're dealing with explosives) that you are distributing the powder for no profit. The way they see it, you are still selling the powder; you are just collecting the money before the fact.
If you step back and look at the deal, they're kind of right. In one scenario, I get $50 each from a bunch of guys, buy some powder, and give it to them. In the other scenario, I buy the powder and sell it to the guys for what it cost. The only difference in the scenarios is when the money was collected. In either case, I have to be licensed to sell it and certified to store it.

This makes sense...thanks for the info. Also, the ATF probably wants to keep a traceable record which would not work if they were split up. I can save a ton of money purchasing 50 pounds of powder but it would take me at least 5 years to use it. I guess this isn't so bad since black powder doesn't go bad.

Yup.....Grapevine BassPro has it. They keep it in the back somewhere, ya gotta ask for it at the gun counter. $22.99 lb. In fact, there is a HUGE sign next to all the pyrodex and such saying to ask for Goex black powder at the gun counter.
DOH !!!

Gibsons The Feds require dealers to store BP locked in a powder magazine Three places in Longview sell Black Powder and onl one keeps it locked and you sign and show ID when purchasing. I agree; never heard of a "smokeless black powder substitue"

I agree; never heard of a "smokeless black powder substitue" Sure you have. The ATF classifies all BP substitutes as smokeless powder. BP is classified as an explosive. You can argue about whether the substitue is smokeless or not but that's the official ATF classification. That's why it sits on the shelf right beside the other powders.
