Anyone have a good place to hunt squirrels around DFW, besides my backyard? I talked to the corp. of engineers and asked about the area off of 546 up towards McKinney and was told it was OK to hunt with a 22 or shotgun. Has anyone hunted this area before?

No, but I'd make the trek up to hunt it with you. Not many people enjoy the fine art of squirrel hunting.

I've loved squirrel hunting since I first followed my Dad thru the East Texas woods in the fall after a good freeze to kill the wolves on the squirrels and rabbits. Golly thats been 50+yrs ago, I've shot a few squirrels in the back yard with a pellet gun but I couldn't get the wife and kids to try eating what they called a "tree rat". I'll check again with the C of E and make sure we can use something other than a shotgun and let you know......slow944

I am looking for a place to shoot air guns also. I miss being able to go out into the wild (or semi wild)to shoot shot guns, small caliber or air gunning. I have squirrels in the backyard and "plink" one now and then when they've devoured the bird seed. It would be nice to find someone with the same interests.

I didn't know there was any C of E land that allowed anything other than shotguns so that would be news to me. I've shot alot of squirrels but never really been on a squirrel hunt. But I'd be up for shooting a few tree rats, especially if you really can in McKinney.

Hate to ask, but what exactly is type 2 land? Is Honeygrove part of Caddo National Grasslands?

its public hunting land but only if you buy a 48 dollar permit. you get a book that comes with it that shows you all the places you can hunt with that permit.

Well I just got off the phone with the C of E for Collin Cnty and he told me shotgun only. So much for my 22 pistol. Guess we'll have to keep looking.

A buddy of mine lives in Henderson and has a couple of squirrel dogs. I took my son over last January and we had a blast. Killed 5 and my son is ready to go again.
Growing up, we had beagles (see Rabbit Hunting thread) and one of my best frieds always had squirrel dogs. Every Sat & Sun we were hunting one or the other.

Man I love to squirrel. Been looking for somewhere to pop a few along the Trinity River bottom. As large has Texas is you would think finding a place to hunt would be easy.

Even if its just to walk out in some field and shoot dandelion puff balls, I miss that walk in the wild with a gun of some sort.
