as soon as duck season is over i'll be looking for gar and carp.
just curious if anyone has been lately. the rivers are really low where i'm at.....i might see if i can sling a few at some gar trying to soak up some sun in the shallows......

I have been wanting to get into it but never do. Maybe this year. I have kids to be concerned about with what I spend on their outdoors first, before mine.
Love the signature pic by the way. Great shot!

I have a boat and kayak....just depends where I'm going. I'll wade in the warmer months. After this rain and the freeze I might have to wait a little longer to get on the rivers. there are still hog to be shot..... Curtis, You'll love it and so will your kids. and ya, I love that pic. That was this year. I was duck hunting in a beautiful flooded wetland. I was blown away by that sunrise. glad I had a camera on me. Here's a pic of one of the gars I shot last year standing from my yak. I grilled him on the campfire that night!

was gonna go this week, but gonna wait now till it warms back up a little. Was doing good on buff and carp during nov here on the trinity at night out of my airboat. I love when the river is this low, see lots more fish and if you dont have an airboat you aint gonna fish where I am.
We shoot tons of fish and shoot tourneys as well, just about quit reg fishing and did quit bass tourneys!!! Another month or so and can start chasing some 200lb+ in the shallow water on the river.

We went out last month and dang near froze to death..LOL It was 28 degrees out and the water on my line was freezing to the opening of the retriever. We still had a blast till the cold airboat ride back to the truck at 1:00am. Big one for the night. Hit a big grassy but bullied him a little to hard and he pulled off:(

Wow! Great fish! Work brought me to the red river a few times. If I wasn't working at the time, I would have been pegging all the gar I saw and slaughtering hogs up there. Quite the infestation up there.

I've never tried bowfishing, but want to. I've never really looked into it, I do bow hunt, can I use the same bow and change to the right accessories, or do I need a bow specific to bowfishing?
Early to bed, early to rise, hunt all day and make up lies.

I have a compound that switches in seconds. I have friends that shoot re curves too that are interchangeable.
Bass pro, cabbalas, academy, etc, normally have the setup in an all in one package. Your reel will screw into where your stabilizer was......at least that's how mine works. I made my own setup with a zebco reel. I like the button to lock the string from unraveling. Some of the setups in the store have a reel that is green, I think, and you have to loop the string in between a cut in the plastic. In my experience this "cut" that holds the string isn't very tight, so sometimes I'll look down and I'll have 3-10 feet of line hanging out. A big mess and a little dangerous! You want to make sure to never let your line rap around you or your fingers. I was constantly doing that with that setup.
Can't remember who makes it. Im sure some others on here know.
Be prepared, you are going to get hooked.....or should I say stuck! It's great fun and very addicting.

My set up is a Old Indian bow with a Zebco Reel attached to it, I only have one arrow attached to the reel. I usually take 2 quivers full of arrows, cause when I am wading my shots are only inches to only about 3 feet. Have pinned several fish at one standing. I agree with Outdoorgal, be preparedto get hooked and or stuck.

You can get an AMS Bowfishing Fish Hawk Combo Kit. Includes: Fish Hawk bow, Model 610 Retriever Pro & Wave Rest (installed). BOW: Combines 20% letoff with perfect draw weight for trophy-sized bowfishing. Shoots like traditional bow, with "punch" of a compound. Custom-engineered "Whiplash" Cam allows for "snap-shooting" by enabling maximum arrow speed at minimum draw lengths. No set draw stop for years of action-packed bowfishing Axle-to- Axle: 35 1/2". Equivalent to 55# traditional bow at 28" draw length. Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, Academy or Cabelas for around $350.00
Just do a search on the net might find one cheaper.

Did you shoot that hog of a gar in midland Texas? I lived there once and I don't remember any gar like that around.
Great catch!
I would freak out if I saw that toad in the water below me. They are too cool! Prehistoric cool!
