I have a remington 788 .308 I have had it forever it was given to me by dad. The stock is pretty scratched up, I want to have it dipped in camo (not sure what pattern yet. My question is this do i just sand it down and have it dipped or to i need to cover it in fiberglass resin first? If so do I fiberglass where the barrel sits or not? Sorry for the dumb questions but I have never done this before

Mannnn, its your gun but in my opinion it'd be a shame to do that to a 788...............

Sand it down and rub a couple of coats of true oil on it.

I did this to a 700 my dad gave me. I sanded down the stock except for the checkering, then oiled it down. The checkering still has the gloss finish but the rest of the stock is matte. I think it looks pretty sharp.

One of my hobbies is getting those old beat up Stevens .22's and making them look great again. I can pick them up for $50 and then turn them into something nice.

I go on gundogsonline.com and get the True Oil gun stock kits. They only cost like $20 or something.

tru oil is a coating you use to finish stock. its nasty and pain in the butt to work with but you will have the best finish available. do 4 coats, sand in between with 600 grit. send me a pm and i can help you out!

thanks!

I think it was 200 grit sand paper I used, it may have been finer, can't remember exactly. The oil just protects the stock, it acts like a sealer. I think I used boiled linseed oil, I didn't want any sheen except for the checkering.

788 have a pretty plain stock so just start sanding, gradually work your way to finer aand finer grit. When you get the old finish off then start coating it with truoil till you get it as dark as you want... You cn also use stain in the color of your choice then clear coat.
I bet texaspride93 will get you started in right direction though!
