may be a dumb question, but as many people do custom builds around Rem 700 actions....why can't you buy just the action to do a build, why do you have to buy a rifle and tear everything off it just to get the action you want???

Because the actions will cost nearly as much as just buying a rifle and parting it out.
Same with ruger 10/22s The rifles cost 190 and the action costs 150...

the action on my gun cost about 900 for the action. You can get a cdl for 400 plus not much more to get it blueprinted and trued.

Mostly because Remington does not sell actions only.

So is it cheaper to buy a Custom that shouldn't have to be trued etc. OR Is it cheaper to buy a Rem action and then add to the price to make it right?

It's still cheaper to buy a Remington and have it blue printed. All my customs have Remington actions. Another action you might look at is a Montana. My gunsmith loves them. Similar to a Winchester Mod 70.

I saw undesignated actions for $410. Rifles are $500-800. It's the same reason people buy Stevens 200 and 10-22's, strip em down, and build em up.

There is not much of a price difference between buying a R700, parting it out, and replacing parts, when compared with custom actions done right the first time, especially such as the Stiller Predator action.
Check Surgeon, Stiller, or Defiance actions for tactical actions which are true, but have more clearance for use in the field than benchrest actions.
Even on a trued R700 action, the screw holes for the bases may be out of alignment and typically those will not be trued up by a gunsmith.
On the custom actions, they will be straight. With an action such as the Surgeon with an integral picatinny rail, it will be very straight and a very solid action.

There are tons of other true custom actions, Farley, BAT, RPA, Kelby, Lawton....
