What a relief! I shot tourney archery when I was younger (before any of us had ever heard the word "compound") Now @ 58 with both shoulders bad, I want to get back in the arrow (bolt) game and extend my season. While sitting on the stand @ the end of rifle season I had a revelation. Deer hunting in Central East Texas seems to be a October/November game. Soooo...I'm getting a crossbow. Looking strongly @ a Horton Vision w/ Slick Trick BHs. Any useful help would be appreciated.

About $700 for the bow. Then like every other outdoor pursuit you have to buy "accessories". In the crossbow game, that's about another $300 to $500....so far.

Bannon,
Don't feel bad about talking crossbow on here. I have a Barnett Wildcat and it's fine for what I need it for. It's very accurate, but very loud (I think they all are). I don't have any disabilities, but just didn't put in the time practicing with my compound bow, so I switched to the crossbow.
Welcome JR

My shoulder has been screaming at me for a month or so. If I can't get some relief I'm going to be looking at crossbows too.

My choice so far is the Horton Vision 175. Very innovative with the reverse limb design. Quieter than most. Good company support. Think I'll be using Slick Trick Broadheads. There's so much to learn, but I like it! Would love to hear from other Texas crossbow people.

I did a lot of research and finally got the Excaliber Phoenix crossbow...the things that swaded me to the Excaliber was a decent price, simple maintainence, easy to change strings-no press needed, no cables, no wheels, accurate, nice trigger, easy to kcock and you don't have to fire the bolt to uncock it, just do it easily using the cocking rope...I like Excaliber's lifetime warranty as it stays with the crossbow and not the owner......only negative is that the width is wider than other xbows....

What I read, Excalibur makes fine bows. I just really like the Horton Vision cause it looks so different. I think it's just like rifles. Buy quality stuff you're comfortable with and pratice, practice, practice.

i dont see why it would be a bad thing to talk about crossbows when most compounds are released by a trigger as well? i personally am thinking about getting a crossbow for some backyard shooting. some pretty nice ones out there for good prices. and plenty of speed too!

Thanks for the link. I switched to Crossbow last year and had not bow hunted for about 5 years. 2 rounds of froozen shoulder, first left then right made shooting a bow very painful. I got a Parker Tornado, very accurate and small/compact compared to many of the others. So far so good with it.

Yeah, something called "scapula costal syndrome" on the left and torn rotator on the right. It's hell getting old but I will continue to try to adapt! I love huntin too much to give up.

A guy on our place just bought the Excalibur this year. He didn't take a shot at a deer but shooting it at a bag target it ran just fine. Simple is never a bad thing and you don't lose much in the power department with them.
