I have a .300 Savage lever action, open sights. What ammo (brand, gr, tip) would you recommend for hunting hogs? I'm looking at the Hornady 180 gr. SST - is there something you think might be better?
Thanks in advance

don't know how you'd go wrong w/ the SST. It seems to be a well liked round.

If you can hit them in the head, almost any thing will drop them. Popped another 175 lb boar Sat. afternoon with 130 gr. Rem. Cor lok's. But it was a head shot!!

Thanks in advance SST's would be more than adequate. I use 70gr SMK's out of the 6x45 (soon will be trying something different) and 55gr SGK's out of the .223 for hogs. Chupa

the absolute "best" bullet for hogs would be a Barnes

I'm not shooting no premium bullets at no stinking hog. They get the cheapest bullet I can find.

I drop hogs with my .17hmr with 20 grain hunting points up to .308s and in between, using SSTs, Corelokts, whatever, dont care if I drop em or they run, they will die soon, one less pig in my pasture.

doesn't matter what you shoot them with. here lately, it's been 110 grn. Sierra bullets out of the 6.8, I'm a big fan of the shoulder blade shot.

I posted a bunch of pics of the barnes tipped triple shock from my .308 on here. Unless you are shooting them in the ear that is the best bullet.

Any bullet with a clear shot at the ear, I had good luck with 245gr hard lead out of my 44 mag, 120gr SP 6.5 Grendel,120gr SP 6.5 TCU,cheap corelocks out of a 6mm Rem., 180 Barnes triple shock Elk load 300 Wtby. But my best was a 25gr V-max .17 rem in the eye, 80yds with a witness! Texas bullet traps, great for meat eatters, bad news for ranchers.

Remington Core-Lokt 100 SP in .243 Caliber. It's all about shot placement!
