To me it's one of those great little calibers that used to be hot stuff but burned out. I'd put it in the same league as say, a 257 roberts or a 300 H&H.
You don't really own these calibers for how great the ballistics are, more of a paying homage kinda thing in my opinion.

Before someone trashes the thread with ballistics and such I will say there is nothing superior about it. BUT!! I love the little round. Its classic, cheap to reload, fun to shoot, mine is very accurate, does not heat up barrels, will kill a squirrel in the head at 100yrds and still kill a deer (disclaimer on the deer but I've seen it), did I mention fun to shoot, accurate, cheap? Mine has a 2-7 with a generous eye relief and most everyone I know can shoot the little gun accurately. 15 shots in less than an inch group with no hot barrel in 5 minutes @100yrds. Ballistically its is inferior to almost all centerfire cartridges. But who is counting??
Did I mention fun?

I had a Hornet for awhile. It was a Ruger 77/22. Loved that little gun but I sold it because I really had no use for it.

I hear you wp that is what it is all about...fun. and mad I copy that too....One of my fav's to shoot is 250-3000 bout the same as the Rob. While we are here sure a lot of 7 mags up for sale too. You know there is a lot in a name so I just wonder if 22 "Hornet" might have some attraction to some ??

BIL grew up with one on a Hill Country ranch. Said that was all they ever used for deer or anything else. He got a Savage about 15 years ago and uses it sometimes. I know lil of ballistics/volocity or whatever, but I have been there when he killed deer with it!
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

I really like the 22 Hornet, not the fastest or most powerful but it is quiter than the larger 22 centerfires, sounds more like a 22Mag. It has proven effective fo up to Coyote and such. The ones I have are accurate and cheap to reload for.
lf the saying "Liar, Liar your pants on fire" were true Mainstream news might be fun to watch

luv mine, it's hyper accurate for a 90 year old round developed for black powder. 35 gr vmax over 13 gr. of little gun. I can load 500 + rounds for less than 70$. everything that has been it's crosshairs has been DRT. no it's not flashly but I still love to shoot that gun.

I have had two and both shot really well. My first was an Anschutz with the rollover stock comb. (also had a 22LR and a .222 in the same configuration.) They were not user friendly field guns as I almost had to wear the stock. I sold all three. Next was a model 43 Winchester, a nice little field gun. Traded it for something back in my gun a week days. In 1983 I bought a Marlin 1894C in .218 Bee and it has filled that niche nicely. A little more oomph than the Hornet, but not a barn burner with the flat nosed bullets. First load shot about 1 1/8" and I have never tried to improve that. Light, handy, fairly quiet, shoot and something usually dies. Have taken animals as large as ferrel goats with head shots. Good rounds-both the Hornet and the Bee. Don't knock the old stuff. If history repeats it's self, a lot of today's whiz bang stuff will not survive. Someone mentioned the 7 mag. In the 60s when it came out it was touted as better than sex. I had a beautiful 7mag on consignment in Austin for four years. Finally brought it home-no takers?

great for suburb hunting, got 10 acres with too many houses around, pull out the hornet. it will kill deer stone cold dead with neck shots and earhole the pigs. 500 rounds out of 1 lb of powder if you reload. sure you have faster rounds but think of it this way, watever a ..223 is at 300 yds, the hornet is that at 100 yds. handloads are the way to go with it though, factory loads are weak. you can get 2900 out of 45gr handloads small , quiet and deadly.
