On a new lease this year that has some turkey on it. Will be doing mostly deer hunting from a box blind but if a turkey show up to my feeder I wanted to take one. I'm afraid to shot one with my 270 because of noise and what it will do to the bird. I was thinking of taking along my 22 rifle since it's a lot quieter. Wanted to know what some of you us and what your opinions are.
Why are you still talking, I stopped listening a long time ago!!

22 will work if you are comfy making head and neck shots with it.

That depends on what kind of turkey you're talking about. Eastern? Rio Grande? If Eastern, the only firearm you can legally use is a shotgun.

I have killed most of my turkeys with a 22 Long Rifle, and done it with body shots. A head or neck shot would be better, but a 22 slug into the heart/lungs will put them down with in a few yards.
If you are in one of the counties with eastern wild turkeys, there is no Fall season and they can only be hunted with shotguns in the spring.
Also, I did not realize this until recently, in the Fall season on the Rio Grandes, the hens do not have to have a beard.

THEY WALK ABOUT 15 YDS FROM MY BLIND HEADED TO THE FEEDER A 22 LR TO THE HEAD WORKS GREAT AT 15 YDS.

yes, but make it close, and use a head or neck shot. i lost a big gobbler one time, hit him 5 times in the body wiht a .22 and never found him.
a .22 report will scare off as many animals as a .270
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

PaulPaul is on our new 1000 acre San Saba lease, so they are Rio Grande turkeys. I'm looking into getting a 22 mag for this very purpose. The place has an abundance of Turkey on it. I'm thinking about putting up 2 feeders next to each other, one with whole corn and a second one with either wheat or milo for the turkey. Whatcha think about the 22 mag and the 2nd feeder?

I actually had a lease near San Saba in the late 80's and took many turkeys with my 22 mag.I mixed milo in with my corn.

I have shot several nice birds with my ruger 10/22. works great, but if I'm not mistaken, rimfire is illegal now for turkeys.....
I have also hit them with little to no damage, other than a hole going thru them with my .308 168 BTHP handloads....

I can not understand why someone would want to shoot a turkey with a .22, much less a deer rifle.
I have always believed in the "if it is legal and a guys wants to do it, then have at it" philosophy. I still do and am not trying to point fingers, just can't figure this one out!
It's not how far a shot, it's how close you got.

Could be that it is a lot easier for people to carry just one long gun to a deer stand than 2.
Could be some people just want to shoot a turkey and will do so with whatever is legal.

My parents hunt a bunch out in west texas for Rio Grande turkeys and they use .17 caliber's when hunting out of a box blind. Never had one fly away. When they are on the ground and don't have as good of a rest, they use shotguns.
East Texas hunting with 100% success rate to date... BDP Hunting.

I RUN ONLY CORN IN MINE AND HAVE JUST AS MANY AS ONE OF MY OTHER HUNTERS THAT MIXES CORN AND SUNFLOWER SEED. IF YOU SAID HOW LONG OF SHOTS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT I MISSED IT... I DON'T LIKE 22MAG FOR TURKEY BODY SHOTS, I THINK I'VE SHOT 4 AND LOST 2 WITH MINE (80 TO 130 YD SHOTS). SHOT ONE WITH A 17HMR AND DID FIND HIM BUT HAD TO RUN HIM DOWN AND SHOOT AGAIN. I SAY SMALL RIFLE FOR HEAD AND NECK SHOTS ONLY.

If shot distance was what was being referred to, then 40 to 50 yards on a body shot with a 22 is as far as I will push it. With head or neck shots 60 maybe 75 tops.

No Sir, tried a bow for a while, did pretty good shooting fish, but after missing a deer at 30 yards, I decided that sow would not have walked off if I had been shooting my 375 H&H.
You just go right ahead and use ALL the sticks and strings you want to.

get a crossbow???? Its all about how effective you want to be, and how quiet you want to make it. I personally would not shoot a turkey with a .22 . But that is just me. An arrow or crossbow bolt is very effective and quiet too.
I have missed with my bow and with a gun.....thats huntin man.

Yes Sir, you were trying to step on toes, and you put in .04 cents worth.
The original post that started the thread was asking if a 22 would kill turkeys, IMO, trying to convince someone they should use something else, is stepping on toes.
If you or anybody else wants to use bows/crossbows/50BMG's/etc., as long as it is legal, I have no problem.
It is when folks start telling me what I should be using, without being the one that pays for my license/shells/gun/lease, that is when I feel like they are stepping on my toes.
It is like how many ways or times does a person have to say no, to get the point across?
