Anyone ever do any hunting with this round? Whats your opinion of it? I never was a big fan of the 30-30 or any of the other commen lever action rounds, but I kinda dig this one. I picked one up at the gun show today and feel pretty good about it.

Opinions?

I think your biggest problem will be ammo availability and selection. But ballistically it is a very capable round. Your best bet will be to stock up when you do find ammo.

Yeah I noticed that. Went to Academy today and all they had was three boxes, I bought all of them.

Not true. I find it in droves all the time.

I use mine for hunting all the time. I have the XLR version and it shoots sub-moa easy. I've shot everything from varmits to red deer with it.

I bought one of these (XLR) when they first came out and I loved it! The round hammered every deer, pig and coyote I shot w/ it. I never got mine to shoot sub MOA, but it would put 3 shots in about 1.25" with no problems. I use to have to mail order my ammunition, but I see it around fairly commonly now. Ended up giving it to a buddy that needed a deer rifle and had fallen in love w/ its lines.

Good rifle, you will be pleased!

David

Its a great round on paper but don't kill any better than the 30-30. I think the new 140 grain leverevolution will open some doors range wise for both the 308mx and 30-30.

I switched back to my 35 most of the time

I cant figure out why they even developed it. We already had the 307 Winchester and the two are dang near identical.

Broke it in about 20 minutes ago.

A small 20lb pig had his rear end towards me. First shot blew his back leg completely off. Second shot put a golf ball sized hole through his rib cage.

I think I'm in love.

I think it is a lot like the 30TC not really needed and doesn't do anything that other rounds already available do. The reloader will not be able to match the velocity at the same pressure levels since the powders used are not available to us. Granted it does have good ballistica for a lever action but like JCB said it is very simular the the 307 Winchester.

I know you just bought yours but I would be buying ammo, it will keep a long time.

The 307 is actually slightly more capable if it were using the Hornady bullets - stuck w/ the ballistically challenged round nose bullets performance starts to suffer at longer ranges. I'm sure the motivation was to have a new cartridge w/ Marlins headstamp instead of Winchester.

"I cant figure out why they even developed it"

I think this would hold true for most calibers grin

You can always do it the expensive way.
