I have been shooting round ball but can't group very well. This is percussion not inline rifle. I know there is some type of cut off as to the twist vs projectiles used. Anyone know what it is? I was trying to stay period correct but????

You should be able to group round balls well with 1 in 48 barrel. Keep experementing different loads while eliminating variables. Just change one at a time. Sometimes just changing from from ffg to fffg (or the other way) will help drastically. For instance, my groups went from 2" at 50yrds to being able to shoot the same hole by simply changing my dry lube from a ratio of 7:1 ballistol to 6:1 ballistol.

I have a T/C Hawken percussion .50 cal with a 1:48 twist, and it took me a little while to get the right load. Keep experimenting, when you do find the load it likes it's amazing how accurate round ball can be.

Try a differnet patch I use pillow ticking and have very good luck with it. I've also used a 54 cal patch for my 50 gives a better seal. But I agree with Flintlock change one thing at a time. Every gun shoots a bit differnet so sometimes to find the right combo can take time.

I agree with everything said above. Good advice.
What brand of balls are you shooting? I like Hornady brand. Is the barrel clean? A dirty barrel will shoot wide paterns. Make sure the ball is set tight to the powder and mark your ram rod. I don't like the hot primers. My rifles likes standard primers. The best patches I have found are at this site and are the premium patches;

I have the same twist in my hawken.. 70 grains 2F at 50 yards. If I want to shoot out to 100 yards seems 100 grains of black powder is best. I have not had much luck with conicals or sabots. My gun seems to like the patched round ball..

Could also try thicker or thinner patches to. Different size balls. I like the .530 balls and .15 pillow ticking. I can shoot the .535 balls to but then I need to use a .10 patch. Play with it some more. Takes time to work up a good load.

What cal you shootin?

Going hog and deer hunting with in January. Going to get my first kill with it..

The 1:48" twist is good for moderate loads of pyrodex, BP or 777. Start out with a moderate load, like 50 grains of 2fg. Vary your patch thickness. I get good results with pillow ticking. Be sure to use all cotton and launder it a few times before you use it. For every rifle there will be an accurate low level load and an accurate high charge load. It might be that you are very accurate with 30 or 40 grains and then again at 70 or 80 grains. Half the fun is finding out. All the advice I read here is very good.
In my experience, ball guns that are accurate with very large charges (100 to 120 gr.) have very slow twists. Your twist is a compromise twist. It does not take a heavy charge to drop deer. It takes a well-placed ball. Work for that.
PS:Keep an eye on your patches. When it is clear to go down range gather your spent patches. They will tell a story. If they are burned through or cut they are too thin or your charge is too hot or your barrel needs to be buffed with polishing compound. All the best.

Ok, this is what I found out as I tried different things. My .50 cal open sight percussion muzzle loader was not happy with round balls no matter what loose charge I tried. At 50 yards I had a 8" grouping. I got some Power belts from CVA and and same 100 grain charge and that did it. At 50 yards it grouped at 1.5 inches.

Issue with my .45 cal inline at 100 yards with Power belts with 2 - 50 grain pellets of Tripple Seven. With scope best I could do was a 3 inch grouping. Tried different things and best results were found with 100 grains of loose Pyrodex powder. Same 195 grain Power belt projectile grouped within an inch at 100 yards.

Ok, now I am satisfied. If anyone needs some 50 grain Tripple seven charges let me know. I have 1.5 boxes of it.

I use Hornady 44 cal. with the green sabots that come with them in my T/C Hawkens .50 cal., 1:48 twist and 80 gr. FF powder. at 40 yds. (which is a far as I need to shoot) I can group about 1"-2". I don't have the "big" kick and it is somewhat easier to clean.
