Only ticket I ever got was from a game warden. I shot a buck ( won't say how far ) on the last day of deer season and by the time the bullet hit him deer season was over.

I would bet that distances are only rough estimates in the vast majority of all shots taken. And just as fish always get smaller once they're put on a scale, shooting distances most often decrease significantly once checked with a range finder or some other means.

I took a friend out deer hunting two seasons ago the deer were feeding 500-600 yards out in a wheat field. We spotted several good bucks running with does, did some calling and repositioning waiting for a closer shot. When an eye catching buck came out into the field. First thing out of my mouth was hell no, way to far, you couldnt even touch one at that distance. Well he didnt listen, the buck started running after a doe back into the thick trees, he dropped that 160" buck running at 535 yards. Dumbest shot ive ever seen. Still pissed at him to this day, every time go to his house and see the mount I want to punch him. Once in a lifetime shot, one that I will never take. Guess thats why he has the trophy lol.

Some are real, some aren't. It's pretty easy to see the ones that are BS. I shot this buck at 475 yards off hand no rest, first deer I've ever shot.
My furthest shot on a deer is 232 yards.

My longest shot was 290 on a running midget deer...I put my 60 yd pin on a exceptionally bright satellite tracking the SW quadrant of the sky when we were on the verge of a solar eclipse. Deer took two more steps and dropped like a rock. I'm telling ya that Bowtech Destroyer is a flat shooting bow:-O
Actually all Marines (at least we used to) qualify out to 500M with M-16's and iron sights and most of the time the M-16's are pretty shot out. The targets are pretty generous silhouette and we did learn to use the sights to adjust for windage (based on range flags) and elevation. My point is only that it is very possible, even with less than stellar weapons once you have done it enough. I used to put a piece of a matchbook between the upper and lower receiver to take up the slop and then leave it there all week when I was shooting so my dope would be good. Man that was a long time ago...

There's no doubt it's possible. But honestly some of the stories get really far fetched. I used to shoot long range a lot, and it shows that I have taken off about 10 years. Range estimation is the key for me, by far. Drop and Drift are pretty much the same as they were, but danged if distances don't measure like the used to!!!

Longest shot I ever made was 315 yards give or take a few. Measured it with my feet and stride, lol.
Other than that, I'd have to say almost all of my shots have been in the 100-150 yard range.

"Tomorrow is another day" as my dad always says
He talked me out of taking a shot over Thanksgiving, biggest buck I have ever had the crosshairs on, 275 yards, dark thirty, windy, very, very thick area the deer was next to..
Sounds like dad was sharing some wisdom and you respected him by listening to it, whether you agreed or not. Good job.

Notice how most are thrwoing in their own little story along with their post... yeah most of them are bs... but this really happend! Your "farthest kill shot" has now been added to the list of things to never believe, other include: -how fast your boat is -mpg's your truck gets -and the size of your favorite apendage Pretty soon we will have to move this to the tall tales section
It's hell eatin em live

I would agree with the OP that the majority are prolly BS but I believe that anyone is capable with the right equipment and practice. That being said here's my farthest shot list: cull buck @ 395yds w/ .223 DRT in the neck
Prarie Dog @ 423yds w/ .223
Prarie Dog @ 519yds w/ 22-250
These were all in a 2 year span back when I was shooting all the time.

I think I'm like a lot of other guys in that I'm a hunter, not a shooter. My gun is just a tool to get meat, not a hobby. Going to the range is a chore, not enjoyment. I only put about a box through it a year, and most of that is just to ensure the scope hasn't moved. It's a cheap gun (but reasonably accurate), and factory ammo. That said, it's still more accurate than I am. My eyesight isn't the best, and I'd have a difficult time even seeing a deer beyond 300 yards without bincos, let alone be able to hold the gun steady enough to hit it.
Longest shot I ever took was 225 paces....clean miss because I thought it was about 175 yards. Second longest shot and longest kill was 125 yards. I rarely need to shoot over 75 yards, and I'd need to think real hard about anything over 200. Without a good rest, 100 yards is the max I'd consider. I know my limitations, and long distance has many for me.
I admire those that can reliably hit at long range, but that'll never be me.
Deer quality is not measured by antler size

I've made numerous shots past 400, my farthest was 515...But I was laying down, in the hills of west texas, and I shoot my .300 win mag with my handloads about 500 rounds a year.
you have to know yourself, your gun, and the conditions and it is very possible to make a humane long shot.

" I was thinking the same thing, a lot of hunters are really not "gun guys" I have the opposite problem, I burn through a LOT of ammo! I LOVE shooting and am a certified gun nut and go at least once a week to the range, handload, always testing bullets, new scopes, guns, etc.. I obsess (ask my friends and family !) over every tiny little detail striving for perfection... probably to my own detriment, definitely financially!

I've yet to witness a muley get shot under 400yds. Hunts I've helped on the shots have ranged from 401-697 all resulting in dead deer. We were told before going out there that those big bucks on public land didn't get big by being dumb, so it was highly suggested to check rifles out to 700-800yds.

I shot a deer late one eavning got back in the stand the next morning right after daylight just in time to see the bullet hit em. He as so far south I shot north it was closer that way . I do break skeet at 750 yds on a regular basis.

I can shoot that far, but all my stands face East and I don't want the hassle of having to buy a NR LA license.

A lot of BS about distance. There are too many factors that come into play beyond 300 yds. Most hunters probably never practice beyond 100 yds. so they really don't know what their rifle will do beyond this. I would say that the majority of people hunting aren't capable of making consistently good shots in a hunting situation beyond 150 yds.

My good friend is a Marine and tells me how they have to qualify open sites with M16 at 500 yards. We are going to the ranch in a couple weeks to have a shoot off down a power line. we can probably get out to 1000 yards (at least see that far). Not saying i will hit paper but i will try.

I might have close to 20/20 with glasses, but that doesn't mean too much for some after a certain age! I wondered about the Marines too. Had always heard they shot at 500m with M-16's.
