Was out guiding aoudad day before yesterday and in the middle of our stalk a lion charged the herd of aoudad! Well long story short the lion presented us with a 325 yard broadside shot. My hunter squeezed off the trigger and the kitty jumped up 6 feet in the air and kicked it legs out.
It did not run off though, it slowly walked into a thicket and dissappeared. We looked for hours and hours for blood, hair, etc. Even followed its tracks into the thicket and no luck.
What is the typical reaction of a mountain lion when hit? Would it normally just walk off even if missed?

It is wquite possible that the bullet hit the ground which caused the cat to jump up and kick its legs out. If you didn't find any blood at all chances are you missed it. If that lion has never been shot at and had no pressure on it, the shot may not have scared it enough to run. I've seen that before with deer and coyotes as well. They just stand there and then walk off.

I shot at a Bobcat on my place before and shot just under him. The cat jumped straight up in the air. It just casually walked off like nothing ever happened. I guess that could have happened to your lion.

Thanks for the help. I was thinking the bullet blew up a rock right bellow the lion causing it to do that. Being not expert I just wanted to double check!

That would be my guess too - under shot him. Congrats on getting to see one. That's quite the treat!
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

The guys nailed it, your hunter missed. Get someone on it with some dogs ASAP.

The two that I have been fortunate enough to shoot have both dropped immediately, then made efforts to run off but died within 20 yards of where the initial shot was. They are tough SOB's. Based on your explantion, I'd say the hunter missed.

I shot at a bobcat that did the same exact thing, but I found him about 5 yards away in the brush dead as could be, but I did find blood where he was standing.

Should of took another shot if it was just milling around. We did but they were near misses. After pumping an aoudad full of lead and watching that hole scenario unfold its hard to hold steady on a kitty.

What a cool story. Thanks for suring it, but to bad the hunter missed it. Sounds like you have a good hunting trip to make out there real soon.
If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

Hey Mike, Lions are protected in that part of the country. Make sure no one knows if you do kill one
