Little slow for 220's. I am thinking 150's to 165 I was thinking about the 170 AMAXs since everyone seems to love them and I am a huge fan of Hornady. This is off the thread topic but with a 24" barrel do you have a load that I could start with reloading; powder type, primer brand, etc? With this rifle I'll be getting set up to reload for it so any info would be great. Thanks.

It has been known to remain supersonic and stable to 8 or 900 yards but I think that's stretching it. The 175 gr. SMK is one of the best long range target rounds but I send them through a 1:10" twist, 24" barrel. If you're wanting a target load I'd seriously consider a 155gr. Lapua Scenar it has a great ballistic coefficient and should stabilize in your twist rate. For a hunting round you can't go wrong with a 165gr. SGK Spire Point Boattail. They weigh in consistantly, they're inexpensive, and they're deadly. I shot a fairly heavy buck with one, this November, at 115 yds and recovered the bullet on the off side. After firing, it weighed 143 gr. and measured .75" diameter at the widest demention. In other words it expended all its energy in the animal and did not exit. For the load, a ladder test is the best way to incrementally find the powder charge, but my 165 SGKs do well with 43.0 gr. of H-Varget. I can explain the ladder test if you're interested.

Simply: The lighter the bullet/ the faster the muzzle velocity, the less twist rate it needs for stabilization. A good example of this is a .223 vs. a .22-250. You can send a 55gr bullet from each rifle; however the .22-250 produces significantly more muzzle velocity, yes? Therefore the .223 has a 1:9" twist and the .22-250 has a 1:12" twist typically. Same bullet two different twist rates, two different velocities acheived. Both stabilize the bullet.
A .308 with a 1:10" twist will stabilize up to 200gr. bullets but might destroy a 125 gr. in flight since it is sending it fast and twisting it too agressively. Make sense?
I'll send you a link, via PM, about the ladder test.

All that makes perfect sense and the PM on the ladder test would be great, thanks man.

That is the perfect twist for a 175 Sierra Match King. For factory ammo, try Black Hills or Federal with 175 Sierra Match Kings and one should run well for you. Hornady match ammo also is very good. I use a 24" barrel and my load is: 175 SMK Black Hills previously fired brass which is Winchester brass, 43.5 Varget Federal 210 or 210 match primer 2.810" COAL. Runs well 3 different 308's that I own. Glen Zediker's book for reloading is the best I've encountered. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=875590This is a good forum for reloading information, especially for the 308: http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=13Good luck. The 308 is a great round.

11.25 will shoot 200 grainers and lower with no issue.

When and sstill in the process of building my 300 wsm Kreiger Barrels I ask the same question and whats the dif in the 1:12 vs, 11.25, " We get 80 $ more for the 5 r," What bullet are you planning to shoot ? 165 1:12 up to 170, if I was shooting 180 he'd recommend 1"10 175 should split the difference like any gun vel, load development, barrel leanth you never know my gun being built around 165. 30 cal, is 30 caliber .308 how fast doesn't matter. Iam no expert I ask the people who make the barrels.

My rifle has a twist rate of 11.25. What weight factory ammos would ya'll suggest I try first? 11.25 is the US Military Barrel Twist spec to Stabilise the M118 long Range projectile, which is a 175gr Seirra Match King BTHP. Start with the Federal Gold Metal Match should work perfect.
