Cold cold cold weather, snow, or a really strong headwind can make them hold a little tighter I've heard. Other than that, they are just really smart birds and more educated towards the end of the season. Same thing was happening to us when we went to the panhandle a few weeks ago.

You either have to be really quiet or have blockers. Also, it helps to push from thin cover toward heavier cover; the birds seem to stick a little tighter if you do it that way.

We always use blockers to keep them held in...Towards the end of the season we even have guys on all sides, make kind of an oval shape around the hunting area.

We usually do that with the more experienced hunters. Its just the same as having blockers, just on all sides, let em get high before you shoot.

blockers are a must, just don't hunt with people you don't trust....

ok so i noticed this season that towards the end of seasons birds[ pheasant ] get up further and further away. any advice on keepin the birds from jumpin too far away to shoot? like one example on the last day of season [2nd] we saw 9 pheasant all which jumped 40+ yards away! I know its frustrating chasing birds and after all that work having them flush too far out of range. But you can think about the upside potential of these wild truly wild birds (seed for next years crop of wild pheasants), they are not stupid. Just like they know how to get away from hunters they also know out escape from the big bad predators. Pen raised pheasants are slow fliers, fly in slow motion, not much fun to hunt and often fall prey to predators. So if you know the land owner with the help of good summer rains you can double the wild population by making sure that you have plenty of undisturbed nesting cover between March and July. Wheat or any soft grass (an ocean of green) for hatching. And for the chicks, escape and insect producing cover like broad leaf plants like sunflowers.

Just nature taking care of its self. Birds wise up fast, and live to make next years crop.

It seems like later in the season the will flush as soon as you pull into the fields. Not all of them some but for sure. I have seen a hawk call used I do not know if it works or not but we always get our limits.
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

Kansas Fish & Game did a study a few yrs ago, the sunflower is most important to the chicks, for the insects
hold on Newt, we got a runaway
