Is Diamond Brand any good?
(Just got a new lab) - the breeder used Diamond. The feed store suggested Exclusive because Diamond is not a good brand in their opinion (even though they carry it). Just wondering if this was good advice?
Thanks

How much money are you willing to spend feeding your new pup? We used innova large breed puppy food. He just tanstitioned to the adult formula. Its an excellent food IMO. not cheap though but I think its the best there is.

I've been using Diamond for years. I get it at Tractor Supply. I feed the Extreme Athlete if the weather gets cold enough and use the Adult Formula pretty much year 'round. My dogs have done great on it. Read the Nutritionals on it and compare them to any brand.

I used it for a couple of years & all I can say is it's O.K., my dogs looked good but never had a solid turd, it wasn't completely runny but not solid either, vet suggested Purina One Lamb & Rice, I have fed it for about two years now & am very happy with it. I feed it year round. My dont spend it all in one place.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

i fed diamond for quite a while and then over night their quality seemed to go down hill. bigger, looser, more foul smelling stools and the dogs didn't have the look or stamina that they did before. I'm feeding enhanced hunters edge now and I really like it. Also had good luck with Zach's but it was too hard to get consistently.

When I worked at a Vet office we regularly recommended Innova, Taste of the Wild, and Natures Own. I'm sure there are others that are really good, too. Just do a little research on the ingredients. The first ingredient should not be corn. Also, if bone meal is the protein source your dog's performance may suffer. All dogs are different just like all people are different. My bull dog does fine on Ole'roy. She is a guard dog and it's working for her(although it is the one of the worst you can buy) Our lab, however, needs something different. We haven't quite got his food figured out. Also, watch the protein content of your food. Too much unused protein in a dogs system will cause kidney problems. I would feed a regular formula in the off season and a hi-pro formula during hunting season. Or if your dog has a sensitive tummy just supplement the regular formula. Just a thought. Don't let people convince you of what food is best for your dog. If you are happy and the dog is happy.....

I fed Exclusive for years and now use the Diamond Naturals. My GSP's are doing fine on the Diamond and it's cheaper in price but not in quality...IMHO. I would be leary of a store that suggest the higher priced food because in their opinion it's better. I get mine from Tractor Supply as well.

I feed Taste of the Wild - the yellow bag, think it is bison? I started to switch to Diamond because it was cheaper but our dogs coats are really good (vet and other comment on it when they see them) so I decided to stick with it. Expensive? Yes, but worth it for my hunting buddy and my wife's lap ornaments

I had always fed all of my dogs Purina (since the 70's). But, my lab/rot mix started developing issues with her hair about 1 1/2 yr ago. We couldn't figure out why her hair was thinning on her back, her tail was almost bare and she was constantly chewing at her back or rubbing against the bricks or fence. It was obvious she was unfomfortable and itchy. No sign of fleas. We tried several other brand foods, Ole Roy, Pedigree, Beneful and a couple of others. We talked to a friend who owns a pet place and they said that many of the manufacurers were slowly increasing the corn content in their processing and many dogs are allergic to it. She said to go with more natural foods and to closely read the ingredients on the label. Seems almost all dog food available at discount stores like Walmart have corn as the #1 ingredient on the list, regardless of brand. We ended up going to a pet shop and finding Ultra. It's more expensive for sure, about $42 for a 40 lb bag. But, corn is about the 5th or 6th ingredient listed. After about 2 months, my dogs coat came back thicker and more shiny than ever before. She looks awesome now and we always get comments on how pretty her coat is. We also mix the dry with can Ultra Max now to give her more flavor.

Had the same exact experience after YEARS of Purina products. It is not JUST the corn, but the fact that they are using GMO (Genetically Manipulated Organism) corn which is not natural corn. GMO is a laboratory developed line of 'mutant' plants (a majority of which is corn, but a lot of veggies & grain, too) owned and patented by large chemical companies like Monsato and Dupont. It cannot naturally reproduce on it's own and if it did, the grower/farmer must pay a royalty to the chemical companies for growing it (even if it grew unintentially - ie, his natural corn cross pollinated with the GMO corn from a neighboring farm.) The same is true with human food. In other countries, by law, GMO food must be labeled and consumers warned, due to allergic/health reactions to it. But the chemical companies have enough money to convince legislators that here in the good ol' USA, it's buyer beware or too bad. So, think about this when your kids develop food allergies... likely GMO. It is the big issue which TRULY underlies the controversial "Food Health SAFETY(???) Act."

Diamond makes a good food. I fed it for a while.
Right now I'm feeding Taste of the WIld and the results have been really good. She's also a picky eater and this is her favorite food by far.

That is an interesting position you've taken. How do you know this to be true? Can you point us toward any studies that support this? Now, I not disputing what you say......I just haven't seen any carefully controlled academic trials regarding any dangers with such foods.

Diamond Premium (green bag) is a very good feed for the money. I have no hesitations recommending it. Stay away from the Hi-energy (maroon bag). That is where a lot of people have had stool problems.

yes sir, hi energy is what i was feeding when the stool problems started in my kennel. I was told by the salesman that they had changed the way they made the food. Instead of having the fat etc. ingredients made into the kibble it was sprayed on to it. figured if they did it with one they'd do it to all so I switched to enhanced. too bad, i had really liked their feed.

I have been feeding Diamond Naturals to my Lab and JRT with no problems. They both look very healthy and are very energetic. They have tried the Beef, Chicken & Rice, and also the Lamb & Rice. They seem to like the Lamb & Rice the best. Does it hurt anything to switch between the three?

CW I've always wondered the same. I know between brand and so forth you should gradually switch. But I have wondered if its the same manufacturer, but different flavors if that same protocol exist.

CW You shouldn't have a problem. I used to switch between different diamond products. I have 2 picky eaters, and it peaks their interest when I change foods. IMO its a misconception that you are supposed to gradually switch over when changing foods. It depends on the dog. Some dogs have iron stomachs and could careless. With my current dogs, I usually switch cold turkey. But they are used to having a varied diet. If you feed a dog one food for a few years and then switch, you'll probably have more of a problem.

Diamonds is average food for descent price. Cant really say anything bad about it I just think there are several brands out there better for the dog. Fromm, Taste of the wild, Blue buffalo, Innova(although alot of retaliers are starting to get away from it becouse P&G bought them out and there afraid P&G will take them to petsmart and make the food with less expensive ingredients)or eukanuba. Are they more expensive?? Yes! Will you have to feed less and have less waste? Yes! Pay more per bag or buy more bags. Its your choice!

We have been feeding Black Gold for the last five years. There are different protein/fat percentage types.
The Ultimate Adult has no corn, wheat, or soy.
It is harder to find, there is one place in DFW, but our dogs love it.
