I've been deer hunting my whole life, used to gut and skin everyones deer in camp that would let me as a kid, I'm 35yrs now and have developed a bad allergy to deer a couple years ago. Does anyone else have this problem, and is there a cure?

It just might be from the dander. There used to be (still might be) a show called Team Fitzgerald (father & son team) on one of the hunting channels. The son was allergic to the dander & had to use gloves, but could eat the meat just fine. Might check with a dr to see if it is just as simple as an animal allergy.

Like Maggie said about the TV fella, I have a friend who is an avid hunter who is allergic to deer hair, or the dander on it.

As long he wears gloves during field dressing and skinning he's fine as long as he doesn't wipe his nose or face in the process. Once the hide is off he can even remove the gloves for quartering, etc. if he wants, the meat doesn't bother him a bit, just the hair.

Eating it doesn't bother me, just the hair.

Just get you some latex gloves and try to stay upwind while skinning to keep the hair off you as best as possible and you'll proably be fine.

Latex gloves and a long sleeve shirt are your friends!

Might try taking a Benadryl or Chlor-Trimeton(less sleepy version) a good hour before messing with one.

X3 had a friend the same way. As long as he wore the gloves and long sleeve shirt and did touch any part of his face he was fine.

I'm allergic as well..My eyes would almost swell shut..Carry latex gloves in your truck and that should fix your problem.Like mentioned above don't touch your face or its all over but the crying..

I'm allergic too. I'm even an allergic the the hides once I hace salted them.

I'm even more allergic to latex.

It's one of those things I just deal with it and keep on.

I think Maggie has a good point with the Benedryl. I would think that any antihistamine would be a good precaution or after thought as it will help ease the symptoms. The easiest way is as mentioned with gloves and a long sleeve shirt although if you are allergic to things, latex may not be your friend. Nitrile or rubber should be ok.

Even a dust mask might help with floating dander.

That craps scary,, I ran into guy 15 years ago in chambers creek bottom . He comes clawin thru edge of pipeline thicket, camo britches an no shirt, wavin his arms looked real yellow an closer he got I realized that face was round ball an no eyes or nose,, rest of chest an arms were solid giant welps ,Looked like comic book character completley swollen out of proportion scary lookin ..We thought bee attack at first an went to help him, got there an he calmly says "man im allergic to deer hair an have nice one down gutted can yall help get him" After we calmed down we got it an he says it happens ever time, I thought Id give it up over that reaction

One thing I could see helping is using the ball/stone and cable method of skinning your deer. Pulling the hide off with the truck or wheeler. You'll be around the dander for much less time than doing it the regular way. Plus it's way quicker, especially if you don't gut them.

Myself, Wife, and daughter were gonna go Friday, wife got sick though.
