Why do you hang them on the fence?

When i was a kid, I was told you hung them on whatever side of the fence you killed them on, to show which side of the property they were taken. Now, I'm not sure why it's done, maybe the same thing still .

Old ranchers used to do it to spook other yotes, though I don't really know how well that would work...

A long time ago I was told to hang them on the fence to keep other coyotes away.
I think after the human scent on the dead yote dissipates it is not much of a deterrent to other coyotes.

It wasn't so much a deterrent as it was a notice to the landowner that the hunter was doing his job. Today it is rarely done, to the best of my memory I would guess it has been more than 10 years since I saw one hanging on a fence line.

i see a few on the central texas backroads, I'd never seen it until I came to texas we always sold them for the hides. I had heard the whole keep other coyotes away theory, I don't believe it for a minute. Showing the landowner that the hunter is doing what he's asked, makes sense to me. I know if I get done hunting at two in the morning I'm not calling anybody to tell how i did.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Back in the days of bounties it was done to show that you actually killed what you say you did in order to collect.

I'd never hang one on the fence good way to let other ppl know it's hunted. Then they'll be askin permission to hunt and irritate the landowner. The less ppl that know where we hunt the better.

Some of the old farmers where we hunt ask us to hang them on the fence still. Its a old tale that the other Coyotes will stay away.. NOT TRUE. Actually about 7 yrs ago there was a write up in the Cook Co paper about some land where there was more than 50 hung on a fence. To be correct there were 87 hung on the fence. Between 8 of us hunting we all hung them on the same fence line. You could not stand to drive past that place once hot weather hit.

Why do you hang them on the fence? Today most people do it to let the lease owner know they have taken a coyote from the ranch (might get to keep your lease next year or some other perk). Back when the practice was started, before they would just email each other, it was a way to communicate to the other ranches that coyotes are in the area so they could protect their stock.

I practice this at my ranch with any yotes that have the mange as a reminder to the two legged vermin in the area, that anything on my place at night might end up hanging on the fence.

When I was growing up in Gunter, we used to hang them on barbed wire fences. At that time seemed like miles of them lol. Used to get a bounty from the county for their ears. Heard rumors they are gonna start giving a bounty on hogs. Hope so lol
