What could lead a buck to develop such and unusual rack?

We scored him at 154 1/2". The longest tine is 20.5"

Curious to hear your thoughts about development.

Always thought it was just genes. Just like hair color or anything else.

That is a very unusual rack on that guy.

Awesome looking could have damaged it right at start of antler growth. Congrats

Yeah, I have considered that a likely explanation. Someone else told me that a buck who damages his skull would develop oddly. Not sure what to believe.

Had a biologist, vet and GW tell me when I shot one that had deformed antler and skull plate that if a deer hurts his front left shoulder or back right leg it can affect the right antler. And if it hurts the right front leg or back left leg it can affect the left anlter. Was still iffy on this info but have examined every deer shot with a goofy antler and have always found some sort of scar or wound to coinside with this info...... And then, some are just freaks.

Interesting. We have been on the lease for 13 years now (high fenced) and never seen genetics like this. I don't believe it is a gene issue. He did something to cause the irregularity. I just don't know what.

If you kick him in the nads, does he have curly horns/antlers like a mountain goat then ? rofl

I killed a buck very similar to this one this year. He was normal last year and a had 3rd main beam of 20"+ this year on his left side. For him it came from antler damage in the very early stages of antler growth. Yours looks the same way since it started above the pedicle. If it had started at the burr or pedicle then I would say previous skull or pedicle damage. It can be genetic but very rare IMO. Really going to make a neat mount on a great buck. Congrats!

I have heard the same thing. It scares me because a guy on our lease shot a nice 10 point, went to go get him after waiting 30 minutes and he jumped up and took off. Found a pool of blood in the pen and then nothing. The next weekend we had pictures of him all scarred on his neck in several places. We checked the feeder pen and it was broken right where he was aiming. Hit the cow panel and splintered the bullet. The deer looks great and healthy, but I hope it does not damage his antler growth for next year!!! He has gone nocturnal btw
