I am new to duck hunting and shot my first duck yesterday...It was a wood duck...I am going to have it mounted...My question, is a wood duck a rare duck and considered a trophy, or is it normal to get several every seaons...

Just curious as to how cool my kill was...Several of the guys I was hunting with said they think they are rare and a unique duck to get, but they are somewhay new to duck hinting as well...

Thanks in advance...

Doesn't matter how many everybody else kills or how special a bird it is to someone else.

Your first bird is always super cool and for it to be a woodie makes it even better.

BTW: To answer your question, I have yet to see or kill a woodie. cheers

They arent rare if you are hunting in timber (east Texas). Everywhere else, they are tough to get.

The reason you can only shoot three? well... Not long ago their number were dwindling due to habitat loss, low numbers of suitable nests (they nest in tree cavities, but cannot build the cavities themselves), and other factors. Efforts were made to focus on building their numbers. Lower harvest regulations and nest boxes have helped the wood duck make an amazing recovery. They are one of the most successful stories in waterfowl management. Up until last year you could only shoot two in the central and pacific flyways, but now you can shoot three. Im assuming the number will go up in the next couple years due to the remarkable bounce back the duck has made. Theres a little history lesson for ya.

Get your bird mounted. they are beautiful.

I hunting North of Sanger close to Ray Roberts...I have a creek in the back of my property on a creek that feeds Raybob...I recently have seen many ducks coming in so I decided to give it a try...Had a small window of opprotunity early (that is when I got my duck) and could not get anymore to come back in...Not very good at calling yet I guess smile I think I was scaring them away...We were concealed well, they just would not come back in after we shot at the first group...

Now I something to work on...It was fun though...

Thanks for all the input....

Took me 7 years to get my first one. Took my girl and she killed two on her first hunt ever. Guess it all depends on your luck. Now you just have to get one of those bluebilled ringneck teal to mount..
