My nephew is coming down for New Years and we will be at the in laws small acreage for that Saturday. He is 14, it will be his first time hunting. Between myself and his step dad, we have taught him decent gun safety and he shoots purdy darn well. However, we will be shooting slugs with our shotguns as my in laws have too many neighbors for rifles these days... I know I need to buy him a youth license... I am unsure if I will let him shoot a deer or not though on his first trip... I feel he is responsible and old enough to kill a deer and help be clean and quarter I just don't know if his first time out too harvest a deer should be open sighted with a shotgun slug! I hope a javelina or hog steps out so he can shoot something...

Any thoughts?

I will let y'all know how it goes! The kiddo could use a hunting weekend... He lost his mom a few months back and he is in a rough section of DFW...

Thanks!

if you feel good with letting him take the shot, let him take it! if he gets a doe he will be hooked, if he gets a pig he will be hooked! just get him out there and yall have some fun.

he will have a blast regardless if he kills anything. if he does get one, be it a spike or monster or cull it will be a trophey to him!!! let it be no pressure hunt. cant wait to see the pics!

He will have fun either way like already mentioned. Just my two cents, but if you feel comfortable with his shooting I would let him shoot any legal deer he sees, or a hog, whatever. After he gets that 1st kill behind him then he can be a little more selective!!

If it is the deer of a life time or a really good wall hanger I don't think I would because kids can miss. I would take that shot, other than that let the young man shoot. I enjoy watching young hunters take the shot and the enjoyment it brings. Much more rewarding than taking the shot yourself. Good luck.

Well we had a good hunt! No spikes or bucks showed up. We had 2 doe and 5 yearling over all. One doe was sniffing us out the whole time... We were 32 yards from the feeder hunting with open site shotgun slugs... He did real well staying still and quiet, the one doe just pegged us right off the bat even being up wind...

He loved the excitement and peaceful outdoors so I think he will definitely want to hunt next year!
