when I first decided I wanted to get an AR style rifle, I was pretty much dead set on the .308, but the more I research I am not sure any more. It appears there are more interchangable uppers for the .223 than the .308 is this true? I am speaking of AR-15 vs something like AR-10, LR-308. like you have the Beowolf for the AR-15 is there others for something in a .308?

If you have a 308, there will never be a need to get a beowolf.

What are you going to use it for ? I would base my decision on the # of calibers that are available for each platform. If your wantin a larger caliber like the 308 and cand spend the money that is what I would go with. The AR15 5.56 will more than likely kill anything your hunting for with no problrm though.

The AR 15 platform has more options and are cheaper but I wouldnt choose a rifle for that alone...

Then Ar15 has more options for sure, but its hard to go wrong with 308 for versatility. Ammo is very cheap and tons of available options. Tons of surplus ammo out there for plinking and devastating TSX, TAP and SMGK's for hunting. It will serve your distance needs as well. With all that said a 5.56 will kill efficiently and you will have more caliber options, but you can hunt nearly any animal in N America with the 308.

I have the DPMS LR308b, with DPMS you can just buy the upppers in different calibers and swap them out with the lowers, your much more limited with the .223 lower because of the cartridge to pretty much a 6.8 i believe and thats from RRA. id buy a .308/ar-10 in a heartbeat, guess it all depends what you want to hunt with it. i shot an 11 point day after thanksgiving with it at 76 yrds and it went 20 yrds and dropped, ive taken many deer with my .308 and none have gone further than 40 yrds. just my 2 cents

I got both. Started with the 5.56. Bought the 308 for hogs. Now I can solve "little" problems or "BIG" problems.

AR10 (308) is a bigger and heavier platform than an AR15 (223, 6.8, 6.5, etc)
I am a huge fan of the 6.8 personally and inside of 400 yards will do anything a 308 will do and is an ideal Texas gun for deer and hogs.
Not knocking the 308 (I have a bolt 308 and love the round) or an AR10, just stating facts.
downside to the 6.8 is ammo can't be had at any store in north America like the 308 can and no cheap plinking ammo
As for as expense, not really any difference in cost with good hunting ammo compared to any other caliber

I once drank muddy water out of a hoof print and was dang glad to get it.

Heres a question along the same line. If i have an AR 5.56 and a nice scope on it. I think i might like a 6.8 also. Does it mess up sighting of my 5.56 upper every time i take it off and put the 6.8 on? Question 2) can i use same mags for 223 and 6.8?

RRA is only manufacturer of one package. Have you forgot about the .458, .50B, 9mm, .40, etc.????

Ive had both. Sold the Ar308 because it was a heavy mofo. If youre walking around stalking game, or you do alotta hiking, it is not an idea rifle. If you hunt from a stand or a blind, its a great rifle. Youre not gonna run across much in Texas you cant kill with a 6.8 unless youre hunting buffalo on one of them high fence exotic ranch, and even still, with good shot placement, itll stop them too. If you look at the 68forums in the hunting section, youll see that a ton of big game animals have been very cleanly killed with the 68. People talk about range but ive seen kills out to 500 yards with them. If you do alotta hog hunting, you cant go wrong with it. Nice and light, light recoil makes for easy follow up shots and picking off multiple hogs in a pack.

The great thing about an ar in any caliber, if you need to you can just keep pulling the trigger until you throw enough lead at what you are trying to kill. I have a rock river ar15 in .223, and have taken many pigs and other animals with it. If i didn't have a rifle and was going to buy one today i would go with the 308 platform. Longer range shooting ability for targets, fairly cheap ammo, and more nock down power than most ar15 platforms (if not all?).

If you have a 308, there will never be a need to get a beowolf. I'm not even going to bother telling you why you're full of Get both... get them all! Start with 5.56 to get used to the wonderful world of ARs. Move up from there. Keep in mind... that's how it all starts. Soon you'll be buying AR pistols in 6.8 because you've got everything else and you want to kill a hog with something new!

ok, next question.
it is my understanding that using a suppressor creates a lot more pressure. would it be best to use an adjustable gas block if you plan on using a suppressor?

A 308 has more energy at 500 yards than a 300 grain beuwolf does at 100. A 308 will do anything a Beowolf can do. The 50 has its place, but if you have a 308 AR you are FAR better off. Versatility isn't even comparable. I have a 45/70 which is ballistically similar, its a cool gun, but essentially a brush gun.
