Maybe between this cold front and rain were suppose to get by the end of the week will start the move on some birds. I hunt up close to the Red River and sometimes on it and this is the slowest ive seen in a few years.

these little pacific fronts are not going to make any huge differences.
We need an artic which we have not gotten, and probably will not.
Kansas is still above freezing. Until they start locking up. We are not going to see a big influx of ducks.
The ducks that are here have been shot to haiti, are not reacting to calls, and are decoy shy.

Good news is the second wave will be a northeastern. Hopefully that will help push birds DOWN.

X2 I'm starting to wonder if the ducks will make it here before the end of the season. -Matt

Pretty sure the lack of rain is the biggest problem. Not water. Being here in the rice fields I'm a little more south than you guys and we HAVE birds. Just lack water greatly. So I know if their here then they've just flewn through North TX. If there would be more water the birds would have a reason to stick around.

Oh I am very aware that they flew through North Texas.
No water for the trash ducks to stick so they are all at the coast.
No cold weather to push the Mallards.
So we are stuck between Mallards to the north. Trash ducks to the south.

I hunted a spot on one of the most overly hunted public lakes in N Tx today and shot 3 greenheads and one hen..all before 8 with no duck call and zero decoys. The key for me was finding the birds the day before in an area nobody else hunts. Most people on this lake assume the birds are always in "certain" areas, and I had actually sworn this lake off for good until I found this hole. Its been pretty tough year for me so far with the exeption of today. With these low water years you really have think outside the box.

I agree completely with the outside of the box approach late in the season...to me this is when it gets fun and the true hunters come out of with the birds!

I hunt up close to the Red River and sometimes on it and this is the slowest ive seen in a few years. This is our 6th season of hunting the wetlands property that we developed in 2004, less than 3 miles from the Red River. It started well and we were actually at a record pace until the split. Opening day of the 2nd half made me believe it was going to be great shooting the rest of the season because Canada and the Dakotas were beginning to freeze and lots of snow was eminent up there. And then ... lights out! Locals left and new birds either flew over us or are still staging north of here. In either case, it's been just slower than slow for the past week. Worst part is were not even seeing any large high flights much less smaller groups that come by for a look. There must be some around here because not everybody posting good shoots could be BSing ... could they?

Hunting down near Garwood with a guide and he has flooded fields (due to pump not rain obviously) and have seen plenty of ducks. Even those trashy pintails! So I think it is a combination but water might be the worst of the evils at this point.

Yeah thats exactly what Ive been seeing I hunt my tank just south of Savoy and we go up to the river west of Bonham and we have always done great. Ive been wondering how its been out there for those boys on the DU reserve "Pintail Farms" out by monkstown I think? Guess I need to bring my "A" game and start scouting!
