The brand new winchesters are pretty nice, I wouldn't own a browning rifle they should stick to shotguns . I know they prolly outshoot the Remington too Hell a Remington 700 will shoot for you, just look at all the law suits. This is the prime reason you see so many good deals on the 700s at all the box stores, they are dumping them...

On that same note, it'll be a cold day in hell before I buy another overpriced, underbuilt remington. The finish on them is horrible, rust in a heartbeat. Accuracy is a joke in 90% of them. I own ONE 700 and it's an older one that's already been QPQ'd because the damn thing rust when it smelled water.
And BMD any time you want to bring your remingtons to my range we'll see how they shoot compared to that Icon. And keep in mind we're talking OUT OF THE BOX, not a Remington that's been rebuilt, modified, etc. Bring some cash along... I wouldn't be interested shooting for just your rifle. That's how a man could lose by winning.

The new company is interested in making money and could care less what they kick out the door. In the old days a Remington from the Custom Shop was a gun you could be proud of. Today's 'custom shop' looks just like the stuff at Academy only with a astronomical price tag.

If you use a Sonic or Taco Casa straw, a straw and spit ball will out shoot a remington too. The Wendy's and Taco bell straws aren't nearly as accurate.

How come? Granted most of us have small fortunes invested in rifles. I know I do in that dam 700 and it still don't shoot like my other stuff does. The old Colt Sauers were bedded in McMillans but otherwise are stock. The Sauer 202s are stock with the exception of a brake. The Blaser is pure stock. So is the Icon.... Getting back to the point here, I would suspect this young fellow is looking for a gun that he can go hunting with, not spend another grand or two getting the bugs out of it. But yeah, anytime you're in the San Antonio area and it's not crop season (my range goes across the fields so during maize and corn season I'm without) you're more than welcome to come and bring the toys to see what they do. This year I added a 291 yard range and next year it should have a 500 yarder too. I may never duplicate that sub 1" group again but I know it happened. Damn near fell off the 4 wheeler when I saw it but the gun can shoot better than anything I own. BTW what do you mean about the Icon falling out like the pro t/c?

I think the only reason those rifles ever sold is due to all the hunting shows and advertisement. How far u from Dallas. He said he has 1000 to spend u can do alot with that if u know what and how to spend it on rifle, I think you can't go wrong w/rec I gave and it's under his budget, and will outshoot an outta box rifle period with other brands recommended so where is that wrong?

Hell a Remington 700 will shoot for you, just look at all the law suits. This is the prime reason you see so many good deals on the 700s at all the box stores, they are dumping them...
The guns that had the problems are 30 years old. Good luck finding many of them still on the shelves at the box stores. The problems you see today are people jackin with the triggers. I had one such 700 that someone jacked with the springs in the trigger and it would go off just closing the bolt. Hard to blame something like that on Remington but lawyers will always find a way.

exactly which 700 do you have?
I have a Mountain rifle with the DBM that I bought roughly 8-10 years ago. It was cherry at the time. Had rust issues from the time it went hunting in the damp weather that I fought with oil till I got tired of it. It's a 270 Win, btw. It did shoot under an inch with some groups into 1/2". Due to wanting to see the bullet hit the target, I had Hill Country Rifles put a muzzle brake on it when I first bought it. Had it bedded at Nagels here in SA so it would maintain the accuracy - don't trust wood stocks after one swelled up many moons ago. Then the never ending rust issue was cured with Tip Burns (Canyon Sporting Arms) disassembling it and having all the parts nitrited. I wanted to put a TI stock on it but the DBM action isn't made for anything but the DBM. No holes drilled anywhere for the hidden box mag or for the middle screw to hold the bottom on if you went to a ADL design. As it sits it still shoots factory Federal 130 ballistic tips into 3/4 or better if you do your part. This past year I did chunk the factory trigger and put a Timney in it that did away with the crunchy feel that the factory one had. When Hill Country put the brake on they did work on the trigger and did make it better but it never felt good. So now I have a rifle that cost more than some of the good stuff and is still worth that a remington is.... That's my main complaint on Remingtons. Unless you buy a custom built Remington that has some maker's name on it you can spend a fortune and when you're ready to sell it, nobody cares how much you put in it. BTW this is the model I started out with: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=207420343Same stock configuration, etc. Nice looking blue steel rifle.

Nope, I disagree with you. There was a post on this forum or one of the other ones I post on. Someone was sitting in the blind with a brand new 700, loaded it up, closed the bolt, and the SOB went off. I have owned 10+ 700s, and I sold my last one a few months ago, a 5r. I just have not been happy with the results of any of them, never shot the 5r, so they all got sold. I think they started loosing quality when they sold out back in 2007. Became more about profit margins then it did about quality. This is obvious when they have thousands of cheap, Made in China products in every Walmart store branded with their name....
