What all can happen if you shoot a .308 bullet out if a 30-06 rifle
Just curious on what could happen to my gun or me
I mixed my bullets up the other day wasn't paying attention and almost shot the .308

The brass case by itself is not strong enough to contain the explosion. The chamber of the rifle gives it that strength.

Since the .308 is shorter than the '06 the projectile would leave the case and accelerate before encountering the lands and grooves. At this point the bullet would slow and create a spike in the building pressure of expanding gasses.

The front of the cartridge would not be supported by the chamber and would likely rupture. The spike in gas pressure could be high enough to damage the firearm or rupture the chamber. The shooter could be injured by shrapnel. Or the weapon may contain it and nothing happen.

I wouldn't want to find out though.

Slap yourself 3 times hard enough to make your eyes water.
Place one each unfired 30-06 round and a .308 on the table, study them until you to say to yourself Whiskey Tango Foxtrot was I thinking.
If it takes more than 1 minute sell the rifles.
