I'm a Rem fan, the 700 would be my first pick.
I've owned and or shot several Savage's. They are plenty accurate but no more or less so than a Rem 700.
I never got used to or liked the accutrigger or stocks.

Handle both see which one fits best, shoot one of each if possible before buying.

If you can live with the blind magazine or don't mind the cost of changing it the 700 adl for around $350 is a good deal

IMO another good deal is the Weatherby vanguard for $399.

Remington's entry level rifles are known for quality issues and other problems while no matter what price you pay for a Savage you get quality.

And even if you had a problem with a Savage, they'll make it right. I had an issue with my action. They replaced it. I got it back 10 days after I sent it out. Wasn't someone recently posting about getting the runaround from Remington on customer support?

I don't think it's reasonable to say that the modern Savages are lesser rifles compared to the Remingtons. It's also awkward to say Savage is more like something low like a Howa than something awesome like a Remington. Why? Well, because Howa makes weatherby's "low" end, most of which shoot sub moa out of the box even after they've been cherry picked for the sub-moa model sticker. All of which can be customized as much as the next gun. This is probably Texas Hunting Forum's Ford v. Chevy nonsense at its worst.

All the modern production rifles will kick the crap out of whatever your grandpappy could get off the shelf, even if granddad's rifle had higher quality wood for the stock. Personally, I don't want to have anything to do with wooden stocks anymore, anyway.

Savage has almost certainly taken more F-open trophies than Remington in the last 5 years. Plenty of custom rifles are built on savage actions. Plenty are built on POST-64 Winchester actions. Winchester actions are superior to both Savage and Remington for a variety of reasons. That would be a better choice for the start of a custom rifle.

Have you looked at an off-the-shelf 700 ADL lately? I wouldn't own one.

My Savage has an issues with copper fouling. None of my Remington do.

Why is it that the only argument 700 fans parrot are the "it's what they use for custom builds."? Something to be said that they pretty much throw the rest of the gun away save for the action. Doubt it has much to do with quality over just being familiar with the action.

Savage makes some really nice stuff.

Yes I have, I would rather own an ADL over a similarly priced or even a more expensive savage.

Ive owned 4 savages none of them were of better quality, shot as good, fit me as well or had any advantage in any way over any 700 I've owned.

The OP asked for opinions mine differs from yours, that doesn't make either right or wrong.

yep, thats why the best answer is that they are generally both very accurate.

Yep, the gent asked for which is better out of the box...the savage will probably be more accurate, the rem will probably look better to most folks....both actions are fine and will last a lifetime. I would buy the one that fits the best in hand and that i get the best deal on, period!

I have a shop full of both, and today's off the shelf Savage's are VASTLY superior to off the shelf Remingtons... it's not even close.

Older Savages were junk, but since their revitalization and reorganization and ownership by gun people and not accountants, they are way better guns.

Really? Not even close? That's the first time I've heard anyone say that. What makes the off the shelf Savage so superior to the off the shelf Remington?

I've also heard people say they didn't like the Accutriggers. I'd like to hear what, exactly, people didn't like about them.

BMD....you are quite the arse!!! As far as i know the parts of the rifle that actually do the "shooting/killing" have nothing to do with looks!!! That being said, I suppose you buy everything thinking about how it looks and not how well it works! That's probably why you've had to buy sooooo many remingtons over the years! I believe the savage has a better reliability rating than the remington. I own both brands of rifles and a rem shotgun, so I like both and would buy both again. However, i give less than a rat's arse how it looks -- its's gona get beat up after a few well used years anyway! You sound like my wife insisting on putting on makeup, fixing her hair, wearing matching clothes...etc prior to going fishing....like the fish care!

Again, to answer the question with some actual factual, usable info -- the savage will probably be more acurate and the remington will have more after market "add on" available, and yes it may be more kind to the eye --- as if the deer care!!

I haven't had a savage sent back to savage since the accutrigger came out; Multiple remingtons were awful out of the box; We have shot them side by side, scoped and sighted in many of both, and the savage out shoots the remington EVERY TIME today. Even for looks, Savages have better finishes today... if it werent' for the decade Savage spent in bed with WalMart et al they'd control the market place completely by today.

LOL. Bassinbiker, you're going to have to let BMD speak his mind about anything that doesn't violate the forum rules. Calling someone names violates the rules. Not sure which one but you get the picture.

Anyway, I'm like you. I could give half a sh!t what the gun looks like as long as it does it's job. Like I said in an earlier post, my Benelli R1 in .300 WinMag is ugly as sh!t, to me, but it serves it's purpose well, although I've been tossing it over to trade it for a nice AR-10 w/ decent glass.

What I keep hearing from the thread is that I should buy both, LOL. Everyone keeps making good points for each rifle and it seem like all the downsides of each are pretty much ancient history as far as off the shelf rifles go.

I can always sell the one I like less and I don't have to buy both at once.

Do you have a 100 yard range at your place where I could shoot each?

Kelly, I think you are on the right track with firing both and see which one fits you better...they have a very different feel once in hand. You really can't go wrong with either.

I call'em as I see'em and he was being rather disrespectful to everyone with a different opinion than his own, which is also against the rules.

Lord, I apologize....and bless the starving pygmies(sp) in new guinea
