It depends on what land. Some public allows deer hunting and some doesn't.

I think if they are in season and the public land you are on allows deer to be taken then yes. Your public hunting lands booklet should answer that question for you.

If you are duck hunting on public land and a deer walks into your spread are you allowed to take it? Thanks for the info Check with the GW, and if its legal to take deer... Keep some 3 1/2 inch buckshot shells handy... You will have to pop em in your gun quitely and if the deer is within range; I'd say 40 to 45 yards max... Take him!

i doubt theyd give you grief if you had a slug with you I agree with that, I have always carried a slug or two with me when out hunting just in case. You never know about hogs, gators, cyotes, ect. when you are walking through the woods in the dark. I've been checked twice in my life and they never even mentioned it.

Good luck with the lead possession when the GW comes calling. Use the, "I saw on THF it was okay" defense. I bet they hear that all the time.

A slug is not lead shot. you should be good but since im guessing, hevi dead coyote T shot will hammer deer with in 40 yards and its 100% legal.

Every public hunting area is different for regs. I had one buck stay for about 15-20 min. at 10yds in front of my boat a couple yrs back. When he finally left, I went to check the area on shore. The backside of the tree that I was tied up to had antler scrapings all over it. I didn't take a shot at him but the adrenaline was there. Didn't want to possibly injure him and go track him down taking away from my duck hunting time. More importantly, I didn't know the Deer regs. for that area. What are the odds? If you do take a deer in a public hunting area, somebody will probably see ya. Be certain of the shot and the law.
Now if it were hogs. Shoot, reload, repeat.

My situation was we were hunting the Colorado river in Garwood and had some deer come through our spread on a very slow day for ducks. And was wondering if it would have been legal if I shot them?

the laws say no one may possess shotgun shells containing lead SHOT or have loose lead SHOT if hunting with a muzzle loader. shot refers to bbs i believe but im gonna check with the GW to be certain but i have been checked and the slugs were never even mentioned
