I've got a serious itch for a .17 and may have to take care of it soon. I think it would be great for all the little hogs we have on our lease and just alot of fun.

It's either going to be a Marlin or a Savage when I get one. For those that have a .17 which do you have and how do you like it? Also my biggest decison would be which scope to get for one. Any suggestions on optics?

I have a savage and love it. just the base model 9317. It shoots well whatever I feed it. Optics I just put a cheap scope that I had laying around since I don't shoot past 100 with it

I have the Savage 93r17btvss. Awesome gun. I can shoot inch and a half 5 shot groups all day. Haven't even tried other brands of ammo for it. It's fun watchin the bullets impact through the scope. Get one! I promise you won't regret it.

All savages so far, I'm kinda surprised.

I'm leaning toward the BRJ Savage right now because the I like the sprial fluted barrel and stock.

I've also got the Savage stainless with the bull barrel and thumbhole stock. It is one very accurate little shooter. Absolutely love it.

I have a ruger m77 .17 and .22 mag. It feels like I'm using a "real" gun and not a miniature

I have a Marlin bolt gun and a Ruger 10/22 mag that I put a Clark 17 HMR barrel on. Both will shoot under 1 in at 100 yards. (after a Rifle Basix trigger being installed in the Marlin)

3x-9x scope on the Marlin
4x-12x on the Ruger

Very fun little guns.

I have a Marlin 917VS with a Mueller APV scope. Great round to toy around with, I haven't shot a Savage but have heard nothing but good things.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Rebelbell that's a sweet looking setup, I just wish the Ruger's were in the price range of the Marlin's and Savages

I also have a savage with the accutrigger and love it! It is a sweet shootin little gun and like said above very accurate! I have shot everything from squirrels to a 150lb sow with mine. For hogs you might try the 20 grain bullets for it because they will mushroom instead of blow up so to speak like the 17 grain ballistic tips

Had Savage 17 HMR Pre-Accutrigger. Lost property to hunt. Traded 17 HMR for Kayak. Got place to hunt. Bough Savage 17 HMR with Accu-trigger. Attached simple BSA 6x24x40 Scope. It's a killing machine!

I've got a Marlin 917VSF with a Nikon Buckmaster 4-14x40 scope. It's pretty dang accurate out of the box, and it's killed a truckload of coons. Eventually I want to do some trigger work on it.

I bought a box of every ammo I could find.

It likes the CCI TNT 17gr hollowpoints. They retain weight really well, and do a great job making things go 'splat'.

Chicken Funny you ask Gummi about mis-fires,especially since he shoots a Marlin 917.I too have a 917 as did my cousin in Colorado. Both started mis-firing. Cleaned mine spotless, still had duds even though the firing pin strikes looked good. Tried different ammo till I found out CCI makes all of it. Cousin dumped his for a song (good move) and I sent mine back to Marlin where they replaced the bolt. Now,15 rounds later,it's doing the same crap.I want my money back for this pos.I hope you saved your original box, makes it easy for multiple shipments back to Marlin. A week ago at the range I met a guy who had one of the new Marlin center-fires,can't remember the model. It was his second;the first he had to send back because they forgot to cut the lands in the barrel! Good luck.

I've got the marlin 917VS also and like it. Its put down quite a few yotes and other varmints.

I've had one misfire but with the dent in this round I highly doubt its the guns fault.

I've got a Marlin identical to Critter Getter's, and it is scary accurate. I had a Simmons Master Series 3x9x40 on it, but took the scope off & put it on another gun that I shoot more often. Marlin is perfect, but I haven't even shot it in over 2 years.
