I put together a hunting trip for the 2nd weekend in January. We are leaving thurday day morning and returning sunday afternoon. We are staying on a floating cabin just north of rockport. There will be 8 people hunting. What should we do with all the birds? We can shot 48 per day. How many can we leaglly travel home with? I know to keep a feather on and all that but we could potential have a lot of birds since we will be out for four days. Any suggestion?

8 people so 8x6= 48 48x2= 96
Better leave a wing on as well.

Eat them or give them away if you get over 96. I would be sure to have them seperated in some way by personal limits. With some sort of documentation about date of kill and hunter.

sounds like you might need to study up on bag limits especially if your hunting the coast... too many redheads, pintails and mottled ducks will ruin a weekend
Attention rickym, this is not a troll post, just a good hearted fun type of post

Yeah man, leave one wing on before you go, and don't have twice your daily bag imit. If you guys limit out the first two days you will have to eat some of them before you shoot anymore. I would pack lots of jalepenos and bacon if I were you!

I would pack lots of jalepenos and bacon if I were you! Don't forget the dark beer......good for letting them soak & drinking. Definately leave on 1 wing. Bacon & duck going to be an appetizer at my family's Christmas Eve dinner: -Cold smoke duck breast for about 15 to 20 mins -Chop duck and cooked bacon up fine in equal parts -Mix with cream cheese to desired consistency -Stuff a Jalepeno or fill a Jalepeno "boat" and back to the grill.... good chit Sorry for off-topic, but the jalepno/duck comment got me hungry and thinking

I just got off the phone with the Game Warden office (we are heading to Amarillo in January and I had the same question) - they said that as long as we have a wing for each bird and can give proof for how many days we have been hunting (a receipt from the hotel will work) then we are legal. She did say that they would probably not check the receipt but just ask, "How many days have you been hunting and how many are in your hunting party?"
It gets sticky if one of your hunting partners does not travel with you and you have their birds. In that case you would need to get documentation from that hunter that you are transporting his/her birds.

While that particular GW would give you a pass the one that stops you on the way home in another county might not feel the same way. Possesion limits are not something you want to get a ticket for.

plus I think you are a lot more likely to run across a Fed hunting down on the coast.

The possession limits are spelled out pretty clearly. I have a feeling that the GW office person you were talking to is unfamiliar with the specifics of the law and couldn't find anyone to ask so they just went with 'common sense'. If you want to be sure, talk to a GW personally, but like I said, the laws are pretty clearly spelled out.

Yeah, just use mesquite chunks/logs; temp is probably 180 to 210 (no therm on smoker) and no direct heat. Will firm them up for cutting and add some flavor to the meat. In this case, the taste is pretty covered but I will use seperate breasts for some enchilades and bacon wrapped bites where the flavor is noticed. I do the same thing with steaks, smoke for 15 minutes and on grill maybe 10 (targets medium rare) and you definately get flavor of mesquite. Heck, I smoke just about everything for that touch of flavor even if I end up finishing it elsewhere.

i actually watched two guys in the parking lot right next to me the other morning get a ticket for not having their birds separate. They had 9 birds total. I heard the GW ask them who's birds were who's and said that by law they were supposed to keep each others birds separated at all times. He gave them both a ticket and took their birds.

That's a GW taking the law to the letter right there. Now what lake and parking lot were you at? Just want to make sure I don't go there you know...

I do not really know what pattern works best. I usually set sneak up about 40 yards up wind from peoples spread pop up when the ducks are setting in.
As a rule they usually do nto invite me down to talk about decoys spreads etc.

Its usually not the state guys that you have to worry its the federal duck sheriffs that nail you on possession limits I just got off the phone with the Game Warden office (we are heading to Amarillo in January and I had the same question) - they said that as long as we have a wing for each bird and can give proof for how many days we have been hunting (a receipt from the hotel will work) then we are legal. I was checked Saturday morning by a Federal Game Warden, our ducks were not seperated, we had 4 people, he did not even tell us we needed to have them seperate, I have never been told that by a warden but have read that on the forums. I guess each Game Warden could be different, I do usually seperate them for the ride home though.

If your hunting the Rockport area be prepared to get checked at least once by the state GW's in their airboat. They really work that area and for good reason!!
