I have used these for years and had great success. Two primary models I use. Depends on personal preference, but I use one with a 55-gallon barrell and one that is strictly PVC that I refer to as "Red-Neck Feeders".

Red-Neck feeder is very simple. I buy a 10-foot piece of 4" PVC and cut it in half (makes 2 feeders). Each 10-foot piece will need a cap, a 45 degree Wye, and a drain.

Glue the 45 degree Wye to the bottom and then put the drain in the bottom of the Wye. You can paint it, leave it plain or whatever. Then you simply tie it to a tree or T-post and fill with corn/protein making sure to put cap on top. In case of rain, water will run through corn/protein & drain into ground which prevents molding. I usually mount the feeder so that the bottom is lifted up just slightly off the ground to assist with drainage.

55-Gallon model is just like a regular 55-gallon feeder except you cut a hole in the bottom and mount a toilet flange from the inside. On the outside you attach 4" PVC to desired length and then attach a 2-Way "T" at the bottom. Main thing to keep in mind with this model is the length of the PVC because your finished product should be probably between 35-40" off the ground.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what keeps the feed from just spilling out of the 4" 45 degree Wye? Does the portion of the Wye that acts as the Drain tube help with some back pressure?? Thanks,

Wish I knew how to attach pics and I would show you an example. I will try to attach link at the bottom. If it doesn't work, go to homedepot.com. Under the search box, enter 4" PVC and hit search. Page 4, top row you will see one of these Wye's. Model 05825H. Install it just like it is pictured. Drain goes in the bottom. 5' PVC goes in the top. It works perfect. Will not spill out and a deer's snout will fit in there; however, hogs or cows snout is too big. I've got pics with 20 pigs standing around trying to figure out how to get the corn out. Here is the link if it works:

You've got to make your "Y"'s ot "T"'s just long enough to hold feed but short enough to not fall onto the ground.

Here's my cheap built one...

Toilet flange on the barrel, then 4"pvc pipe, a 90 degree elbow, and then straight into a 45 degree street elbow. Drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom to let the rain water drain. Works great and I can just un-screw the tube and put my spinner back on if I need to.

This method works great, been doing the same thing for about 5 years. Only exception is a Y at the bottom

Yeah, only reason I did not put a T there was I was originally going to back the feeder into the corner of the feed pen with one leg out of the pen. It wasn't until after I got it set up that way that I got worried about the cows being able to get to it and moved all 3 legs back into the pen.

Sorry for bringing up a 2 month old topic, but has anyone worked out a way to get a timer on this?

Clogging: Some proteins are worse than others & also depends on annual rainfall for a given area. I personally have had very minimal issues.

Timer: I've never had a reason for one. I wanted a free choice feeder so they could eat as much as they want & I also do not have corn/protein piled up on the ground. I do not have a high enough deer population to empty my feeder fast enough to be of concern.

I have recently modified my feeder also with the bossbuck attachment listed above. Also helps with possible clogging concerns.

How high off the ground is the bottom of the pipe?

Heres my recent addtion. Cost @ $50 ea. But $70 to fill the SOB each time....what have I committed to :-)

The 3 way opening at the bottom is a Game Winner (Academy house brand) that was on sale for $20 last week. The plastic barrel is food grade with sealable lid which local store sells for $20. Spray paint $5. Kids painting labor...FREE

I free feed protein on one side and corn on the other. I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the feeding tray so I can poke a coat hanger up the spout if it gets clogged (added sweet feed to protein, supposed to help attract more traffic).

I just put a camera on it so I'll report back deer opinions at later time......

I'll be looking for pics, that looks pretty good. Did you spill the protein?

I tried a plastic barrell on my homemade feeder and the condensation inside keep it clogged all the time finally had to pour the whole feeder on the ground and start over with a metal barrel.

That ladder looks like a death climb if you had a bag of feed on your shoulder. BE CAREFUL !!!

The feed tube is 37" from the ground.

I don't climb it with feed. I get up the ladder and hook my leg around one of the steps and someone hands me the feed to dump in. But you're right, it could be dangerous to climb with a bag of feed over your shoulder.

I built it that tall so the cows cant reach the timer when I put the timer back on for corn. When I do that, I move it out of the pen and put it the opposite direction from the other corn feeder. So I have one feeder in front of me at 150 yards and one behind me at 150 yards. I see different deer at both believe it or not.

HOw do you keep coons out of the PVC Redneck feeder that gets strapped to a tree. I like the idea but concerned about how easy it is for coons.

Same question with tripod version? How do you keep the coons off. I have heard greasing the poles but can't they jump up and hang on and pull themselves up?

Good question.... I have no idea. Seems no matter what I try they always find a way.
