I purchased an SKS last spring. My first autoloader ever. I wasn't impressed with the grouping until I tweaked the gun. Now owning it for about 9 months has me sold on the 7.62x39 bullet.

I've been doing a lot of reading and reviews of the 7.62x39 and am considering getting it in the A.R. platform. Now for my hunting purposes 25-125 yards most (hogs are the primary quarry).

I've been playing with the idea of building an A.R. in the 7.62x38 platform. I don't trust the .223 for hogs. I have a .308 and it's a little too much for my night vision. The .243 and the grendel is a little more than I want to spend for ammo.

If you have an A.R. in 7.62x39 what are your likes and dislikes?

What kind of nightvision do you have that 308 is too big for?

There are several companies that make an AR in 7.62x39 and you sure won't go wrong there, but at those distances, cost considered, I'd just get an AK.

Ask me how I know they work...

My recommendation would be a Yugo or Polish with an Ultimak system. I love mine, the Ultimak is the single best firearm accessory I've ever bought. It just plain works...

The biggest gripe about a 7.62x39 AR is the mags, luckily C-products has some available that work good. The straight mag well on the AR makes it hard for the mag to feed because the tapered case of the 7.62x39 needs a curved mag.
Other than that the bolt face is large for the AR15 bolt so it isn't as strong as the .223 botl face but it still works.

Have you tried the dog leg rail?

Seen it but prefer the Ultimak- allows for co-witness.

The second gen will cowitness, its gonna be sweet. We start getting them in January. I have a gen 1 on my Norninco and love it.

To the Op's question. To my knowledge Bushmaster is the only company making them right now. Reviews seem to be good on them.

I like my Bushmaster in 7.62X39. It's accurate and reliable. It's an M4 profile upper. I paid $500 for it delivered from Bud's Gun Shop. It really does make a nice hog gun.

ive played with the idea but I haven't found a way to put on a NV scope on an A.K. 90% of my hog hunting is at night.

All you need is a picatinny rail, right? Several companies make picatinny mount options for the AK. Side mounts are probably the most sturdy, but I do like the Ultimak system. DSS's dogleg rail would also work.

An AR would be awesome and I'm not trying to dissuade you, just saying that you could get a cool AK and a LOT of ammo for what the AR would cost you...

OK, new folks. Just found this room. I have an old (new to me) Chinese Police issue (I believe)SKS... 7.62 X 39. Excellent condition, shoots friggen great but I am a cop who has no long rifle training (small town). I love this thing. I have to admit. Been using FMJ's but was wondering about (survival mode, sorry-way out in the stix in Ks.). Found out the FMJ will go thru 20" of posts and boards. That actually kind of scared me. Secure shooting area, just had no idea that this was that potent a cartridge. Hell, I am used to my Glock model 22/.40 cal. Jeez. As far as a man-killer (think deer, so you can feel better), which round is preferred? FMJ, Hollow point, or soft tip? My range would be not much more than 100 yards. I also have LOTS of deer, here for the taking, as it goes. (Ks. can only have soft tip, five round mags...for this caliber). Just curious. Anybody want to talk? Love this thing. Wanting to upgrade to a combat stock (Tapco, etc.) with rails for a scope, but man, I really had no idea this dude was this hot. And I know it is not that 'hot' a cartridge. Thanks...
Wolf

The scope can handle the recoil. My eye can't. Ha, Ha, Ha.... When using my 7.62x39 there's almost no recoil. Def. not worried about scope pushing into my eye socket!

A buddy of mine looked into these and he found several companies that made an upper for this round. Bushmaster, Model 1 Sales and there was one more he found but I can't remember who it was, I'll have to check on that. He was really wanting to get a 7.62 upper but decided to go with the 5.56 instead.
