Hello everyone. Hope ya'll don't mind a South Carolina boy signing up on your website. This is about the only place I've found that seems to have much information on spin feeders.

Normally, we try to use foodplots to attract deer, and avoid putting out corn, even though it's perfectly legal to do.
But, with the extended drought we're going thru right now, most of our plots are failing, and we're very close to the end of our planting season. So, it looks like corn is going to be our only choice.

So, I've picked up a couple of feeders, and have read on here about hoe long most of you guys set the timer durations for, but my question is

What time(s) of the day do most of ya'll set the feeders to run? Just before daylight, after sunrise, just before sunset?

Thanks for any help ya'll can share...

Presently got mine set for 7 AM and 5 PM with a 6 second run time. Like it to go off about legal morning shooting light and late in the afternoon when the season starts. In Texas we can legally shoot 1/2 hour before sunrise and 1/2 hr. after sunset. Don't wait too long before dark to set it off so you will have plenty of time for the deer to come to it before you run out of shooting light. Also, if you have to track one, it is a lot easier before dark.

Yep us Texas boys are always looking for the easy way and aren't too proud for the old feeder trick like the rest of America seems to be. You guys love to bash us and then ask for help, funny. Anyways when the deer get used to the feeder going off they will come anytime you set it to go off. It will take sometime though and that thing you lost is your pride. Just don't tell your friends your using a feeder!

Not sure where you got the bashing from the fact that we try to avoid using corn. Doesn't have a damn thing to do with pride or or ethics, nor did I make a single judgement about baiting. I've baited PLENTY over the years, but it's just not as effective here, as it seems to be in Texas. Probably due to the agriculture and ample acorns.

We hunt a 6000 acre farm, planted in row crops. Pouring corn TENDS to make the deer around here more noctournal, and attracts hogs. Once the hogs move in, the deer HERE, tend to leave the area, which is why we prefer to use foodplots instead of corn.

But thanks for the warm welcome. Recon I chose the wrong site...

I like 7 am and 5 pm with a 6-8 second feed depending on how hard the deer are hitting the feeders

Mine are set for 6:30 and 4:45. I like them to already be milling around at day light.I'm in blind generally by 5:45.

7am noon and 4:30pm

I like having the feeder going off at noon because sometimes the deer will move during the middle of the day to feed especially if there was a really bright moon out the night before or if its really cold throughout the entire day.

I agree that this seems to be the only place where anyone who actually knows what they are talking about talks about the feeders. Being from MN, many people seem to think that feeding the deer is bad. I think they are nuts, but that is just my opinion. We can not bait deer, but we can put out feeders as long as we do not hunt within a certain distance. I like to put the feeders out and put a cam on them to see what survived season. Plus, with the bad winters we have here sometimes, I suspect that my feeders are helping the roosters and turks survive.

When I hunted on aplace with a limited amout of turkey I used to mix milo with my corn jucts for the turkey. On most feeders you could set them up to feed amost anything such as bird seed. This may sound funny but many folks in urband ares love to watch birds but dont want to constantly fill the smaller feeders. They set them off when they want to and the birds learn what time dinner is and soon learn what time dinner is. Not much different if you think about it.

If the hogs are coming in to corn poured on the ground they will eventually find your feeders. It would probably be a good idea to build a pen around the feeder to keep the hogs away from the corn and from bothering the deer.

I'm a little different on the morning time. I usually go with 7:15 am. That way all the way into Dec. when the days are really short the deer won't start gathering in the dusky pre-dawn. I don't much care for looking at or watching deer shadows. I want enough light to be able to make some judgements about the deer that are there. 4:30 pm is my afternoon time of preference. In Dec., here it will be too dark to shoot just a few minutes after 6 pm, especially if the feeder is in a draw, bottom, or the shadow of a hill.

I am experimenting this year with my morning time and have set the timer to go off at 5:45AM. Worked well during bow season and so far it has for rifle season. Just haven't seen that shooter buck so far!

Evening time is set for 5:00PM.

By the way.....keep your times constant year round....DO NOT ADJUST FOR DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME!

The spin feeders are almost a necessity when hunting certain areas of Texas as we are drought stricken half the time. Some of the areas we hunt will only grow large Rattlesnakes and the deer just won't graze on those crops. So if you like Venison get a good feeder and they will come.

5sec at 6am, 10sec at 4:30pm during deer season. Extra corns in the afternoon if you want some hogs.

7:00am and 5:00pm on my programmable feeder

I have 2 dusk/dawn feeders on another blind , usually go off around the same times(give or take 10-15min) as the other ones I can set the time on

Don't pay no attention to some of the non-friendly, your welcom here anytime. We have been bashed many times about using feeders but he went about it the wrong way. I use a feeder but at the same time pour corn on the ground maybe on the other side or an area that is heavy travels where they come out. When you get your feeder set up there are covers that go over the lid of the barrel, so to say and cover over the lid. That really protects the rain from sitting on top of the barrel and maybe leaking into the corn. Make sure you have a funnel INSIDE the barrel. Welcome again.

Thanks, Jigfish
