I am starting to toss around ideas for a long-range rifle. I was thinking maybe 338 lapua(sp?). I am not looking for a .50 or .416. Anybody give me some ideas for different calibers and make/model of rifle.

30-378 WBY .... would look at the wby rifles except at the vanguards.
300RUM/300wby remmy 700 AWR or Alaskan TI (if you can find one..comes from the remmy custom show, but you have the 700 action should you want to get it further customized)

338 Lapua is a great round, but expensive to shoot. 300 RUM and 300 Win Mag are good alternative choices. 300 WSM and 7mm WSM are great short action choices. Most recreational shooters will never see the benefit that the 338 Lapua provides. It really depends on what you will be using this rifle for. Long range hunting, I would stick with the .30 caliber choices. Just long range shooting you would have several different choices with less drop and higher velocities. Just my two cents.

Dpends on the range. A .308 can be considered a long range round if 800 meters is long range to you.
Anything around 1000 yards I would go .300 win mag (I think it will remain stable out to like 1200 or 1300 though). .300 RUM, .30-378 Wby, and .338 lapua are just too expensive to shoot (for me anyway).

Long range being 1000 yds or so. Not really looking to do any hunting with this weapon until I become proficient enough to make an ethical kill, even at 400 yds. Would like a heavy barrel to help with the obvious recoil, and I wont be toting this weapon around the woods. Bottom line is I would like a rifle that has potential to be an effective round at 1000yds. I had thought about .308 but I didnt think past 700 yds or so that the energy would be sufficient to kill. Thanks for the help guys. Oh by the way, before I get torched, in all reality I will never even attempt to shoot a deer at any distance greater than 400-500 yds as there are just too many variables for those longer range shots. I just think it would be fun to own a weapon that has the potential. I already own a 22-250 that I use for long range varmint, just want something bigger that is effective at longer ranges.

in that case you could easily get by with a 300wm/wsm. If you want to go pick up and look at one that is hvy and an enjoyable gun to shoot, check out the Browning Abolt M1000 Eclipse.

7 mm rem mag and some VLD's will effectively get you to 1000 with out gobbs of recoil and not to harsh on the pocket...

308 and 175g bullets will easily bang steel at 1K all day long and the same gun can cleanly kill deer out to 500 yards
I run a 20" barreled LTR and do just that

30-378 wby 338-378wby or 338 lapua. IMO these are the top three 1000 calibers under 50 caliber.

Are you looking to do 1K occasionally for fun or compete? if the latter, are you going to spend 2K on a scope?

if it's something you just want to be able to do and have the personal satisfaction of having done it a few times but primarily want a sub 500 yard hunting rifle, the 308 is the way to go
cheap to shoot, effective, accurate
Lots of guys compete at 1k with a 308, or a 260 Rem...

unless you reload there is not a lot of match ammo out there for the .260 although its a very effective round.

A suggestion... a 308 will be easier, and cheaper in every way, to become proficient with at longer ranges... before adopting a howitzer for 2 bucks per bang

.308 would be a good choice for what you want

From what I am reading you should go 300win or 308 if you want short action.

6.5-284, would be my choice for what you have described. I have been thinking about such a rig myself and will probally have it within the next year.
