I have been on a lease in Comanche county for about seven years and have noticed that we see lots of deer every year with broken antlers. I have some ideas as to why this occurs but was wondering if other leases experience the same.

Buck to doe ratio's are at or just about where they need to be. Lot's of competition for doe's. That is good.

Just about every buck on our place has some kind of broken antler.

Most would say it is because there are too many doe or not enough causing the bucks to fight more. the ratio needs to be about 1 to 1 if you want less broken racks

With a 1 to 1 ratio the bucks would be competing more for does therefore you have more sparring. If the buck to does ratio was 1 to 5, seems the bucks wouldn't need to spar and compete because there's plenty of does to go around. Btw, we have quite a few bucks that are broken up in Shackelford County as well.

we're close to a 1 to 1, and about 50% of the bucks I have been seeing have some breakage. I saw several bucks over the weekend that have lost nearly an entire beam...

We've noticed a very high amount of breakage on our place, 3 or 4 bucks with broken main beams, multiple others with busted points. Very few with intact racks. Stxranchman had a good point, this year, due to the rains, healthier, stronger bucks should lead to more broken antlers.

The more does to bucks, the less broken antlers. Yup! When I hunted the Fairfield area we had about a 1 buck to every 10 Does ratio. Hardly ever saw a broken rack. Now I hunt Coke County and we are pretty close to 1:1 on our place and a good 50%-60% of the bucks are broken......even the little yearlings.

Yeah, clearly not a pro. I've never heard a single biologist, or individual that manages a heard say more does to buck means more broken antlers.
Think about it, if there are 10 hot chicks per guy at the bar, there aren't going to be many fights.

ours is pretty dang close to a 1 to 1
if you want big deer, why do you want to grow/feed/manage a bunch of does?

so whats a good ratio then. what do the bioligists and actual ranch managers say that you have heard???? I've always heard 2 doe to 1 buck is a good ratio. With a closer ratio you will have more fighting, but bucks will have to move around more to find a hot doe.
