Wind rocked the truck/my sleeping spot all night. Probably blowing 25 mph right now. Feeder 119 yards to my Northeast. 1 acre stock tank 100 yards to my west. 3 acre flood plain between the two and to my Northwest. Still too dark to see. Haven't hunted this stand in 3 weeks. Have only seen small bucks and lots of does here.

In the dark, senses are amplified. Smell, hearing become keen. Not enough light to see, but the sound of deer walking on dry grass echoes.

I hear two does run across field in front of me. Silence. Then what every hunter longs to hear-- a buck thrashing a sapling to my north. He stops--he bolts. I can only make out his outline, but he wants to join the does.

They have stopped near feed pen; he wants more cover. Slips into knot of mesquites beyond does.

Still not enough light. I raise my rifle and find a good rest. 12 feet off the ground I have a good position to survey and surmise.

Just as the sun gains a few degrees in the sky and light fills the field between me and the mesquites, he steps out.

Beautiful deer. Very symetrical. Tall and wide. Nice tine length. Inside spread a little more than ears. Not young, but not an old man; he looks like he has had a rough few days. His back appears to have been raked by a foe--or perhaps a tree. I bet neither look any better.

He would be the biggest deer I have ever taken. But in a one-buck county, I don't flick the safety. Today he eats my corn and tonight maybe he can finish what he started with that tree.

He's still eating ny corn. And I'm feeling less poetic. Hard decision to make.

I have one like that that I nicknamed Mr. Piggy. He would get under the feeder and run everyone off. In an AR County, it sucks when they know you can't shoot them!!! LOL

Well, I'm back in the jeep drinking coffee. No blood stains on hands. I have a week off coming up and was planning on hunting every day. Just hated to put and end to that trip by killing this deer. I'll keep an eye on him and consider him later in the season. Fun morning watching. He stayed around for almost two hours. Wish I had a picture. He was a good'un.

All I have left of the season this year is the last 3 days of muzzle-loader season!!!

nice reports. That wind was blowing for sure, watched a spike (yearling) and a 4pt eat all the corn in an hour
