Who was hunting then?
After crushing pheasant with #5's last weekend, I can only imagine what it was like to duck hunt with lead.

I can remember back when if you were something like 100 miles from the coast you could use lead and yes it was good.

it was great, ducks actually died from one shot EVERY time I bet. Smacked a big rooster with IC in the M2 at close to 50 yds, and it was stone cold dead when I picked it up.

Fish eat lead...bad for enviroment. Do not eat the lead propaganda from D.C. More heavy metals go into the environment from discarded electronics than from all hunters/target shoots combined!

I didnt buy into the lead poisoning then and still dont. At least not on private land. I grew up and hunted about 35 miles inland from Matagorda. We had to shoot steel starting in '85. Sometimes I wouldnt shoot over the same area but once every 2-3 years.
Back then Winchester used to load a magnum load with a plastic buffer in the shot.XX Magnums. I have a full box on display just to remember the good old days. Deuces for geese and deadly out to 75-80 yards. 6's for duck and it would flat spank them.
Yeah, if you spanked a hen mallard you had 90 points, 1 more duck would finish you up for the day. I think a canvasback was 100 points, greenheads were 20 or maybe 25. But, pintails were 10 points and we could shoot 10 a day and did several times while hunting geese

Randy T is right on with the 7.5's! A friend of my use to load some custom 7.5s and they would smoke the birds. #6 was the bread and butter load for me. After I watched him blow a barrel with the hot loads I stayed with the H brass 6. I think the last county I shot lead in was Freestone back in 89 or so. Those first steel loads were crapola but I killed ducks. High brass lead is more than steel now. Who woulda thought..Even the craps-pert winchester loads are way better than those early steel loads.

Yes sir #6 2-3/4" would cart wheel them and didn't have to worry about it hurting the A-5. When my brother first started taking me hunting under the 100 point system most ducks were 10 points, he told me not to worry about the limit, he said it would not be an issue for me, he was right. It was 1985 when most species went from 10 or 20 points to 35 but a hen mallard or woody would finish you up quick. I think within a year or two they went to a 3 bird limit instead of using the point system. Here is some info from back in the day http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=JJc...=6909%2C7915178

I use to shoot #5 2 3/4" XX winchester copperplated...
Like everyone said you could fold birds at 50 yards out...
There was no cripplin' birds, they fell dead...
There was a lot of guys that didn't want to conform to "steel shot" and some that still shoot the lead stuff...
and for the lead Poisonin' B.S. it's B.S.!!!!!!

Those were the good ol days!!!
2 3/4 #7.5 shot were all you needed. And 3" #4 would flat out destory a goose, and you really didn't need that much.
I still remember the days when pintails were 10 points and we'd stack up piles of pintails like chord wood.

The introduction of the 870 Express in 1988 was timed perfectly to accomodate the steel 3" magnum rounds and the resurgence of the bird populations and duck hunting.

I heard ban of lead was because eagles and hawks were eating wounded birds and dying from lead poisoning

My first couple of years duck hunting were with lead shot and I was using a 20 guage single shot....when they made the switch we started having way more cripples

Well we all still use lead on dove right? Maybe some of these other lead loads they had for ducks where different types of special lead. I mean all this talk about ducks always falling dead, no cripples. Hell I see cripples all the time when I'm dove hunting. Ah the good ole days.
I don't know...seems like the fishing stories you hear where each time they tell it the fish gets bigger and bigger. Or maybe like most of my duck hunting stories where each time it's told we shot more and more beautiful spoonies.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!
